Prada Launches Limited-Edition Sandals Celebrating Indian Craftsmanship
Italian luxury fashion house Prada has announced a significant collaboration with Indian artisan organizations to launch a limited-edition sandal collection inspired by the traditional Kolhapuri Chappal. This initiative formally recognizes the centuries-old craft and its artisans, marking a pivotal moment in the intersection of luxury fashion and indigenous craftsmanship.
The partnership was established through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed on Thursday, October 12, 2023, at the Italian Consulate in Mumbai. Prada has teamed up with two state-backed agencies: the Sant Rohidas Leather Industries and Charmakar Development Corporation (LIDCOM) from Maharashtra, and the Dr Babu Jagjivanram Leather Industries Development Corporation (LIDKAR) from Karnataka. These organizations represent traditional artisan communities across eight districts in both states where Kolhapuri Chappals are meticulously handcrafted.
The Kolhapuri Chappal, which received a Geographical Indication (GI) tag in 2019, highlights its cultural and artisanal significance. The upcoming collection, titled “PRADA Made in India x Inspired by Kolhapuri Chappals,” aims to produce approximately 2,000 pairs of sandals. Each pair will retail for around €800 (approximately Rs 84,000), significantly higher than the traditional pricing of Kolhapuri sandals in India.
The global launch is scheduled for February 2026, with the sandals set to be available in 40 select Prada stores worldwide and on the brand’s official e-commerce platform. This collaboration comes after Prada faced backlash earlier this year for debuting a sandal design at its Milan fashion show that bore a striking resemblance to Kolhapuri Chappals without acknowledging their Indian origins, leading to accusations of cultural appropriation.
This formal partnership is seen as a corrective step, ensuring that the artisan communities receive due recognition and economic participation. In addition to the commercial aspect, the three-year agreement includes a long-term focus on skill development and craft preservation. Prada’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) arm plans to design and implement local training programs aimed at upgrading artisan skills while preserving the authenticity of the GI-tagged craftsmanship.
Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal welcomed the collaboration, describing it as a “truly global collaboration.” He expressed optimism that such international recognition could elevate Kolhapuri chappal exports to US$1 billion annually, thereby placing Indian craftsmanship firmly on the global luxury map.
This partnership not only highlights the rich cultural heritage of India but also reinforces the importance of ethical collaboration in the luxury fashion industry. With this initiative, Prada not only pays homage to traditional artisans but also sets a precedent for future collaborations that respect and promote indigenous crafts.
