Renowned New Zealand Cartoonist Garrick Tremain Dies at 84
Garrick Tremain, a respected political cartoonist and former landscape painter from New Zealand, passed away at the age of 84 on Saturday at Lakes District Hospital in Queenstown. Tremain’s more than three-decade career in political cartooning made him a prominent figure in New Zealand’s media landscape, known for his incisive commentary on political and cultural issues.
Born in 1941, Tremain transitioned from landscape painting to political cartooning in 1988. He quickly gained recognition, producing daily cartoons for leading newspapers such as the Otago Daily Times and The Press. His work was characterized by a sharp eye for detail and a willingness to tackle sensitive topics, which often earned him both admiration and criticism.
In 2019, a controversial cartoon related to the measles epidemic in Samoa sparked considerable backlash, prompting an apology from the Otago Daily Times and a review of Tremain’s position at the publication. Although he also issued an apology, he criticized the newspaper’s response as a surrender to political correctness. Following this incident, Tremain continued his work independently, sharing his cartoons via email with supporters at no charge.
Legacy as a Political Commentator
Despite stepping back from newspaper work, Tremain remained active in the cartooning scene until this year, when he focused on completing his autobiography, which was published in October 2023. His determination to continue creating art until the end was a testament to his passion for cartooning and his commitment to sharing his perspective with the public.
Tremain’s health declined due to angiosarcoma, a rare and aggressive cancer, diagnosed shortly after the death of his wife, Jill Tremain. As he faced his terminal illness, Tremain reflected on his life, stating, “I’ve had a bloody fantastic life. I wish I wasn’t dying, but I’m still feeling good and full of energy.” His outlook illustrated a deep appreciation for his experiences and the time he had spent in New Zealand.
Tributes Pour In
Following his passing, the Taxpayers’ Union, which Tremain supported, paid tribute to his work. Executive Director Jordan Williams noted, “For decades, Garrick’s work cut through political spin with intelligence, clarity, and unmistakable wit.” He emphasized that Tremain’s cartoons were not just humorous but also thought-provoking and often uncomfortable for those in positions of power.
Political commentator Frank Newman remembered Tremain as “a truly outstanding individual,” praising him as the most talented political cartoonist of his generation. Beyond his artistic skill, Newman highlighted Tremain’s wit, insight, fearlessness, compassion, and humility.
Tremain leaves behind a legacy as a critical voice in New Zealand’s political discourse, and his work will continue to resonate with those who appreciated his unique perspective on the world.
