Residents Raise Concerns Over Harlow Lifestyle Village Development

Developers of the Harlow lifestyle village are navigating the consent process for the first stage of the project, which is located behind Shepherd Avenue in West Melton. This initiative has sparked significant concern among local residents, particularly regarding the strain it may place on existing medical facilities.
During a meeting of the West Melton Residents Association last week, chair Sam Wilshire highlighted that the current waiting times at local medical practices are already extended. “Waiting lists at the doctors are significantly long enough already, so who is going to cater for these people?” Wilshire remarked, pointing out that the West Melton Medical Centre is currently not accepting new patients.
The Harlow brand is managed by the Ultimate Global Group, and its chief operating officer, Lloyd Cloughley, has confirmed that medical facilities will be included in the new village. However, he did not specify whether these facilities would be available in the initial development stage. “I can confirm that construction of GP facilities will be in the early stages of the development. If demand exists for additional medical facilities, we have the ability to incorporate it, as the development will be carried out in stages,” Cloughley stated.
While the Harlow development is not currently under appeal, Wilshire noted that residents had previously submitted opposition to the project during the private plan change phase. They did not, however, submit objections as part of the District Plan review, which Wilshire described as “sneaky” and detrimental to community voices.
In response, Cloughley emphasized that the project underwent a review under the District Plan, allowing all community members the opportunity to provide feedback. He reiterated that the plan remains consistent with what was presented to the association back in 2022. “We are always willing to meet with residents and address any concerns they may have about the project,” he added, indicating a commitment to community engagement.
The Harlow lifestyle village has the potential to significantly alter the landscape and services of West Melton. As the project progresses, the balance between development and community needs will be pivotal in shaping the future of the area.
