Sir Tim Shadbolt, Former Mayor of Invercargill, Dies at 78
Former mayor of Invercargill and Waitematā, Sir Tim Shadbolt, passed away early this morning at the age of 78. His death marks the end of an era for local politics, as he was a prominent figure in New Zealand for nearly three decades.
Sir Tim was recognized with the Knight Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit in the 2019 New Year’s Honours List. He served a remarkable eight terms as mayor of Invercargill from 1993 to 1995 and again from 1998 to 2022. Additionally, he held two terms as the mayor of Waitematā (Auckland) between 1983 and 1989, making him one of the longest-serving mayors in the country.
In a heartfelt statement, his long-time partner, Asha Dutt, expressed the family’s sorrow: “Today we lost the cornerstone of our family and the man who has devoted himself to promoting the city of Invercargill for almost 30 years.” She described him as a “kind-hearted man” with a deep commitment to the community, highlighting his advocacy for various social causes, including Māori rights and education.
A Legacy of Activism and Public Service
Sir Tim Shadbolt was an iconic figure, instantly recognizable for his charismatic personality and infectious smile. Born in Auckland in 1947, he attended Rutherford High School and later Auckland University. His rise to public prominence began in the 1960s, where he became known as a passionate student activist, protesting against the Vietnam War and apartheid.
His career in politics began in earnest when he was elected as mayor of Waitematā in 1983, where he served for six years. His tenure was marked by both colorful achievements and controversies, including a lawsuit against Independent News for defamation regarding his missing mayoral chain and robes, which resulted in a $50,000 settlement in damages.
In 1998, Shadbolt made a significant comeback to local politics, winning the mayoralty of Invercargill in a byelection after initially being voted out two years prior. His ability to connect with constituents kept him in office until 2022, when he lost his final bid for re-election.
Throughout his career, Shadbolt also engaged with national politics, notably as a candidate for the New Zealand First party in the 1994 Selwyn byelection. His playful nature was evident in various public appearances, including a famous cheese advertisement where he quipped, “I don’t care where, as long as I’m mayor.”
Community Impact and Personal Reflections
His contributions extended beyond political office; Shadbolt was a staunch advocate for education, particularly in his efforts to maintain the autonomy of the Southern Institute of Technology. His engagement with the community and dedication to social issues left a lasting impact on the people of Invercargill.
“Tim will be remembered with gratitude, respect, and affection for his commitment to the south and his passion for life,” Dutt stated. “The citizens of Invercargill can be proud of the enormous legacy he leaves.”
As his family requests privacy during this difficult time, arrangements for a funeral service will be announced once confirmed. The passing of Sir Tim Shadbolt is a significant loss for the community he devoted his life to serving. His legacy will undoubtedly endure in the hearts of those who knew him and in the history of New Zealand politics.
