Survivor Nicole Elliott Raises Awareness in Relay for Life Event
Nicole Elliott, a breast cancer survivor from Edendale, has taken the initiative to raise awareness about the disease by participating in the upcoming Relay for Life fundraiser organized by the Cancer Society in Southland. The event, scheduled for March 2024 at the ILT Stadium in Invercargill, aims to encourage people to prioritize their health and seek medical assistance when necessary.
Elliott, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in December 2022, emphasizes the importance of vigilance regarding one’s health. “As Southlanders, we put stuff off and say ‘she’ll be right’. I just want to make people aware to listen to their bodies, and if something is wrong, get to the doctor,” she stated. Her participation in the event includes a “celebration lap” honoring those who have battled cancer, followed by 10 hours of walking, entertainment, and guest speakers.
Personal Journey and Advocacy
Elliott began her journey with breast cancer when she first noticed a lump in her breast in November 2022. At the age of 44, she initially decided to wait until her next birthday to participate in the national screening program. However, debilitating migraines and persistent nausea prompted her to seek help at her local health clinic.
After a swift examination, Elliott was referred for an ultrasound and connected with a surgeon. She credits her ability to navigate the process quickly to her private health insurance. “I know it’s really hard at this time, but it allowed me to get everything done so quickly,” she remarked. On December 23, 2022, she received the diagnosis of cancer in her right breast and surrounding lymph nodes, leading to surgery in January 2023.
While the surgery itself was manageable, Elliott faced ongoing challenges stemming from the cancer’s effects on her body and the emotional toll it took on her family and friends. She commended Aynsley Dermody, a cancer navigator and supportive-care worker, for providing essential support during this difficult time. Her role is funded by donations raised through the Southern Cancer Society, allowing her to aid families like Elliott’s on their journeys.
Sign Up and Get Involved
Elliott encourages community members to join the Relay for Life event, noting that those who register before the end of the month can benefit from a half-price entry fee. “If we can get as many people as we can committed and signed up now, then it’s all the better for the awareness and that extrapolates out,” she emphasized. This initiative aims not only to raise funds but also to foster a supportive environment for those affected by cancer.
For Elliott, the Relay for Life symbolizes the importance of community support and acknowledgment of the cancer journey. “That’s what the Relay for Life is about; it’s about just acknowledging those that have fought it and recognizing that it’s a hell of a journey,” she shared. Participation in the event offers an opportunity to surround oneself with caring individuals, reinforcing the message that love and support are vital during challenging times.
Those interested in signing up for the Relay for Life can find more information on the official website. Joining this event not only contributes to cancer awareness but also supports vital services that assist individuals and families facing similar struggles.
