Tennis Star Evelyn Webster Passes Away at 101, Celebrated Career Remembered
Evelyn Webster, a celebrated tennis player who made her mark in the sport during the 1940s, passed away in late August at the age of 101. Known for her remarkable achievements in both junior and national tennis, her legacy continues to inspire generations of athletes.
Born Evelyn Attwood, she rose to prominence in 1941 when she won the junior girls’ national title. By 1948, she had secured her place in tennis history by claiming the national ladies’ singles championship. Her competitive spirit was evident as she dedicated herself to the sport, saving diligently for a significant move to England in 1950.
Life in England and Wimbledon Appearances
From 1951 to 1955, Webster lived in London, where she worked full-time as a secretary while continuing her tennis career. During this time, she competed in four Wimbledon tournaments, showcasing her skills in both singles and doubles events. While her performances at Wimbledon were notable, she found greater success in county tennis, where she won various tournaments and further established her reputation as a formidable competitor.
In late 1954, Evelyn returned to New Zealand, marking the end of her overseas chapter but the beginning of another significant phase in her life. Upon her return, she married Eric Webster, and together they became instrumental in creating an anchorage at Smokehouse Bay, located in Port Fitzroy on Great Barrier Island. This site, affectionately known as Webster’s Wonderland, became a popular destination, reflecting their passion for the area and its natural beauty.

Evelyn Webster’s contributions to tennis and her community are deeply felt. Her achievements laid the groundwork for future generations of athletes, particularly female players in New Zealand.
