Tennis Star Evelyn Webster Passes Away at 101, Leaving Legacy

Evelyn Webster, a celebrated tennis player and notable figure in New Zealand’s sports history, passed away in late August at the age of 101. Webster, born Evelyn Attwood, made her mark in the tennis world during the 1940s, winning the junior girls’ national title in 1941 and the national ladies’ singles championship in 1948.
Webster’s journey began in New Zealand, where her talent on the court quickly became evident. After her impressive performances, she made a significant decision in 1950 to sail to England, where she would reside from 1951 to 1955. During her time in the UK, she worked full-time as a secretary in London while competing in prestigious tournaments, including four editions of Wimbledon. Although her success at Wimbledon was notable, she found greater triumphs in county tennis, where she secured several tournament victories.
Upon returning to New Zealand in late 1954, Evelyn married Eric Webster. The couple became instrumental in developing an anchorage at Smokehouse Bay in Port Fitzroy on Great Barrier Island, a site now fondly referred to as Webster’s Wonderland. Their contributions to the local community and the sport of tennis have left an enduring legacy.
Evelyn Webster’s life was marked by her passion for tennis and her commitment to her community. Her achievements in sports and her role in enhancing local infrastructures will be remembered by those who knew her and by generations to come. As a pioneering figure in New Zealand tennis, her impact extends beyond her records, inspiring countless young athletes in the sport.
