Evelyn Webster, a prominent tennis player of the 1940s, passed away in late August 2023 at the age of 101. Known for her remarkable achievements on the court, Webster left an indelible mark on New Zealand tennis and beyond.
Born Evelyn Attwood, she emerged as a tennis prodigy, clinching the junior girls’ national title in 1941. Her prowess on the court continued to flourish, culminating in her victory at the national ladies’ singles championship in 1948. This achievement solidified her status as one of the leading players of her era.
In 1950, Webster made a significant life decision, saving diligently to embark on a journey to England. She settled there from 1951 to 1955, where she worked as a full-time secretary in London. During her time in England, she participated in four Wimbledon tournaments, competing in both singles and doubles events. While her Wimbledon appearances were notable, her greatest successes came in county tennis, where she won numerous tournaments.
After returning to New Zealand in late 1954, Evelyn married Eric Webster. Together, they became instrumental in the development of an anchorage at Smokehouse Bay in Port Fitzroy on Great Barrier Island, a location now affectionately known as Webster’s Wonderland.
Evelyn Webster’s contributions to tennis and her community are remembered fondly. Her legacy as a trailblazer in the sport and a beloved figure in New Zealand will endure.
