The Housemaid Fails to Captivate Despite Strong Cast
The Housemaid, directed by Paul Feig, is a film that attempts to revive the nostalgic thrills of the 1990s erotic thriller genre, but ultimately falls short of its ambitions. Set in the affluent community of Great Neck on New York’s Long Island, the story follows young Millie Calloway, played by Sydney Sweeney, who deceives her way into a live-in nanny position with the Winchester family. While the film starts with promise, it quickly reveals its weaknesses as the plot unfolds.
Plot Overview and Initial Promises
The narrative begins with Millie arriving at a luxurious mansion, eager to impress the family despite knowing her résumé is fabricated. The tension escalates when she receives an unexpected job offer from Mrs. Nina Winchester, portrayed by Amanda Seyfried, prompting viewers to anticipate a wild ride of suspense and intrigue. This setup evokes memories of classic thrillers like The Hand That Rocks the Cradle, leading audiences to hope for a similar experience.
Unfortunately, while the film exhibits elements of dark comedy and tension, it struggles to maintain momentum. The script, adapted from Freida McFadden‘s novel, seems rushed. Screenwriter Rebecca Sonnenshine had less than a year to transform the source material into a screenplay, a challenge that is apparent in the film’s execution.
Character Development and Performances
The film’s pacing falters in the latter half, largely due to lengthy narration from both Nina and Millie. These segments disrupt the film’s rhythm, preventing it from delivering the expected climactic moments. Paul Feig, known for directing hits like Bridesmaids, struggles to elevate the material. Despite his ability to craft engaging stories, even his direction cannot amend the flaws inherent in the screenplay.
Sweeney’s performance as Millie lacks depth, often appearing disengaged. Her chemistry with Brandon Sklenar, who plays Andrew Winchester, seems flat. While Sklenar fits the role of a handsome husband, his character fails to develop beyond superficiality, leaving audiences wanting more complexity.
In contrast, Seyfried delivers a standout performance as the increasingly unhinged Nina. Her portrayal adds a layer of intensity, as she navigates emotional turmoil and erratic behavior, bringing energy to her scenes. Yet, without strong counterparts, her efforts are insufficient to rescue the film from its shortcomings.
A notable mention goes to Michele Morrone, who plays Enzo, the gardener. Despite his striking presence, the character’s role in the narrative remains unclear, leaving viewers questioning his significance in the story. This lack of development further contributes to the film’s disjointed feel.
Conclusion: A Missed Opportunity
The Housemaid, while aiming to tap into the nostalgic appeal of thrillers from past decades, ultimately fails to deliver a cohesive or engaging narrative. Despite some strong performances, particularly from Amanda Seyfried, the film is hampered by a lackluster script and uneven character development. As a result, it feels more like a missed opportunity than a revitalization of a beloved genre.
Opening in cinemas on Boxing Day, The Housemaid may attract audiences curious about its premise, but it risks disappointing those hoping for a thrilling cinematic experience. As the film attempts to blend elements of suspense and dark humor, it serves as a reminder of the challenges inherent in adapting popular literature into film.
