Volunteers Energize the iAM Games in Invercargill, Bringing Joy to Many

Inclusive Activity Murihiku (iAM) successfully hosted the third annual iAM Games in Invercargill on September 16-17, 2023. This two-day festival provided inclusive opportunities for young participants aged 5-21 with various physical and intellectual impairments, including those who are blind, have low vision, or are neurodiverse.

The event showcased a variety of adapted sports across multiple venues, allowing participants to engage in activities tailored to their needs. The atmosphere was vibrant, driven by the enthusiasm of volunteers and the joy of the young athletes.

Gemma O’Neill, Spaces and Places Lead at Active Southland, noted the significant impact of the volunteer efforts. Her 11-year-old son participated for the first time, helping to coordinate logistics for the event. He was responsible for ensuring that the correct information was displayed on buses to facilitate smooth transportation for participants. O’Neill’s son also took on the role of a “hype man,” cheering on families and participants alike.

The day was filled with action as volunteers and participants moved between Southland Cricket, Southland Hockey, Deep South Archery, and ILT Stadium Southland. O’Neill’s son witnessed firsthand how much planning is required to execute such a large-scale event. He observed the various sports in action and saw his peers enjoying them, all while wearing huge smiles.

Despite the unpredictable Southland Spring weather, the event concluded with many tired but happy children and their families. The success of the iAM Games was evident, not only in the smiles of the participants but also in the valuable lessons learned by young volunteers. O’Neill’s son has already expressed his eagerness to volunteer again next year, illustrating the lasting impact of the event on youth engagement.

This year’s iAM Games emphasized the importance of community involvement and the joy that comes from participation. The festival not only provided a platform for young athletes to showcase their abilities but also fostered connections within the community. The enthusiasm of both participants and volunteers created an uplifting environment, making the event a resounding success.
