Young Vocalist Walyn Tafoou Triumphs at BandQuest National Finals
Walyn Tafoou, a 12-year-old student from Bathgate Park School, has achieved remarkable success by winning the Star Vocalist Award at the national finals of BandQuest. This prestigious achievement not only highlights her vocal talent but also sets the stage for her upcoming performance at her school’s show.
In a heartfelt statement, Walyn expressed her pride in winning the competition, stating, “I didn’t know I was going to make it to the nationals, but I had faith and I’m so proud of myself.” Her winning performances included renditions of Stan Walker’s “Māori Ki Te Ao” and Beyoncé’s “Love on Top,” accompanied by her band, Ōreo.
From Humble Beginnings to National Recognition
Walyn’s passion for singing began at a young age. She recalled, “I used to try to be a diva and sing like Beyoncé.” Her musical inspiration comes from her aunties, who are also talented singers. “They push me to the limit and encourage me to do my best,” she shared. Walyn credits her vocal abilities to her faith, stating, “He gives me the good talent to sing and share my voice — that’s the logic.”
Despite her talent, performing before an audience can be daunting. Walyn described feeling nervous during the Otago regional finals for BandQuest. However, she found her confidence on stage, stating that she regained her strength once she started singing. Her music teacher, Alex Brown-Hunt, recognized Walyn’s potential when he witnessed her perform with the school’s kapa haka group. He noted that her voice stood out during solo parts in their Polyfest performance.
A Celebration of Culture and Talent
The upcoming school show, titled “Te Ao Mārama,” is set to be a significant event for both Walyn and her peers. Written by the school’s dance teacher, Losana Taungapeau, the performance will explore themes of Māori gods and methods of sustainability. The show will culminate in an ensemble performance featuring many students, with Walyn taking a lead role.
As Walyn prepares to showcase her talents at her school, her journey serves as an inspiring reminder of the power of faith, encouragement, and dedication. Her achievements in the BandQuest competition highlight not only her skills but also the supportive community that has helped her along the way.
