Young Writers Invited to Enter the Rod Oram Memorial Essay Prize
Young writers in Aotearoa New Zealand are invited to participate in the inaugural Rod Oram Memorial Essay Prize, aimed at fostering innovative ideas for a more equitable and sustainable world. The deadline for submissions is set for March 27, 2026, at 17:00 NZST. This competition honors the legacy of Rod Oram, a prominent journalist and environmentalist who passed away in March 2024, leaving a significant impact on the nation’s discourse around social and environmental issues.
Oram was renowned for his insightful commentary and rigorous research focused on business, government, and societal improvement. His work emphasized the need for transformative approaches to address the pressing challenges facing the planet. As stated in one of his first columns for Newsroom, “We see the deep damage we’re inflicting around the world. Ecosystems are suffering, societies are shattering, politics are polarising, and economies are failing to deliver what we need.” This powerful message serves as a guiding principle for the essay competition.
Essay Submission Details
The competition is open to New Zealand citizens or residents under the age of 25 as of the submission deadline. Participants are tasked with addressing the question: “What must we do – and do now – to ensure that future generations live well in Aotearoa New Zealand?” The essays should not exceed 1,500 words and must present an evidence-based argument supported by current data related to economics, society, and the environment.
Entrants are encouraged to propose actionable solutions to well-defined problems and to adopt a compelling writing style that appeals to a wide audience. A unique perspective from Aotearoa, within a global context, is essential. Writers can draw inspiration from Oram’s extensive body of work and the key issues he championed, including climate change, innovation, and the definition of ‘common wealth.’
Judging and Prizes
The winning essay will receive a prize of $1,000 and will be published on Newsroom’s platform. Additional noteworthy submissions may also be featured at the discretion of the editorial team. The panel of judges includes notable figures such as Vincent Heeringa, a former publisher who collaborated with Oram for over 20 years; Anna Fifield, Asia-Pacific editor for the Washington Post; Jonathan Milne, managing editor of Newsroom Pro; and Celeste Oram, a composer and musician who is Rod’s daughter.
This competition seeks to inspire young voices to contribute to critical conversations about the future of Aotearoa New Zealand. Participants are encouraged to express their views passionately and authentically, reflecting Oram’s belief in the power of individual perspective.
Essays can be submitted via email to [email protected]. This initiative not only commemorates Rod Oram’s legacy but also empowers the next generation to advocate for meaningful change.
