Authorities Warn Against Trespassing at Phillips’ Crime Scene

Authorities have issued a warning against trespassing on private property related to the investigation of the late *Phillips*, who lived in hiding for nearly four years. Following a confrontation on March 11, 2024, that resulted in Phillips fatally shooting a police officer, investigators have stated that the area remains an active crime scene. While cordons on *Te Anga Road* have been lifted, officials urge both the media and the public to avoid the location as evidence is still being collected.
The incident unfolded after a burglary in *Piopio*, where Phillips reportedly opened fire on police following an attempt to spike his quad bike. The officer, who was struck in the head and shoulder, remains in *Waikato Hospital* in critical condition. In the aftermath of the shooting, Phillips was shot and killed by responding officers.
Authorities later detained one of Phillips’ children at the scene, while two others were located unharmed a short distance away in dense bush. The children are now under the care of *Oranga Tamariki*, New Zealand’s Ministry for Children.
Following the tragic events, police discovered several makeshift camps where Phillips and his family had been residing. Items recovered from these sites include quad bikes, trail bikes, tarpaulins, oil containers, and tools, as well as a toilet bowl. Photos released by authorities reveal tents camouflaged with netting and surrounding vegetation, suggesting a deliberate effort to remain hidden.
Investigation Continues
Detective Senior Sergeant *Andrew Saunders* indicated that evidence suggests Phillips may have received assistance from other individuals during his time in hiding. The police are continuing to explore this possibility as they analyze the items recovered from the camps.
Local law enforcement has called for respect for the ongoing investigation and the privacy of the family involved. The community has been deeply affected by the recent events, and police are working diligently to ensure that all evidence is gathered thoroughly.
As investigations proceed, authorities emphasize the importance of adhering to warnings regarding trespassing. Those entering the area without permission may face legal consequences, as police seek to maintain the integrity of the crime scene. The community is urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity as the police continue their work.
