Barry Jensen Targets Auckland Council to “Fix What Matters” in Howick

Experienced businessman Barry Jensen is campaigning for one of the two available seats in the Howick ward on the Auckland Council. Jensen, a local entrepreneur and resident of east Auckland, aims to address pressing local issues that he believes have been neglected for too long.
With a background in business spanning over a decade, Jensen has successfully established several companies, including Jensen Commercial Cleaning, Cleanstay, and Bad Offroad. He describes himself as a problem-solver rather than a politician, emphasizing a hands-on approach to governance.
Jensen’s campaign slogan, “Fix what matters,” encapsulates his commitment to addressing the core concerns of Howick residents. He criticizes the current state of local services, pointing out that essential services are frequently delayed or ignored. Issues such as broken footpaths and unsafe playgrounds have left residents frustrated with what they perceive as a lack of accountability from the council.
To tackle these challenges, Jensen proposes a four-step approach to local governance:
Jensen’s Governance Strategy
1. **Listen**: He emphasizes the need to genuinely hear residents’ concerns instead of merely nodding in agreement during meetings.
2. **Prioritise**: Jensen intends to focus on significant issues rather than getting sidetracked by less important matters.
3. **Fix**: He pledges to take decisive actions that lead to tangible results, pushing for the completion of projects.
4. **Follow through**: Jensen aims to maintain accountability by ensuring that commitments are met and that those responsible are held accountable.
Jensen’s insights into business management, budget handling, and teamwork stem from his extensive experience. He believes this mindset is crucial for effective governance.
Originally from Zimbabwe, Jensen relocated to New Zealand in 2004 and settled in Howick with his family in 2022. His journey has instilled in him a deep understanding of the importance of reliable systems, as well as the consequences when those systems fail.
He argues that governance should not be about political rhetoric or media headlines but rather focused on delivering results for the community. Jensen appeals to voters by stating that more waste should not be tolerated and that residents need leaders who are willing to engage directly and take action.
As the local elections approach, Barry Jensen’s campaign presents a fresh perspective aimed at revitalizing local governance in Howick. By prioritizing community concerns and committing to practical solutions, he hopes to foster a more effective and responsive council.
