China Conducts Live-Fire Drills Near Taiwan Amid Rising Tensions

China has initiated live-fire military exercises surrounding Taiwan, marking its sixth major round of drills since 2022. The Eastern Theatre Command announced that these exercises will take place over ten hours, beginning at 08:00 (0000 GMT) on Tuesday, during which five designated zones will experience restrictions in sea and air space. This escalation comes on the heels of heightened tensions following a significant arms package announcement by the United States, valued at US$11.1 billion, aimed at bolstering Taiwan’s defense capabilities.

These drills occur shortly after Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi suggested that a hypothetical Chinese attack on Taiwan could provoke a military response from Japan. The timing of the exercises, 11 days after the US arms announcement, has drawn sharp responses from Beijing, with the Chinese defence ministry warning of “forceful measures” in reaction to what it perceives as external interference.

Military Capabilities on Display

China’s military has deployed a variety of assets, including fighter jets, bombers, unmanned aerial vehicles, and long-range rockets. The drills will involve simulated strikes on mobile land-based targets, showcasing a coordinated attack plan from multiple directions. Shi Yi, a spokesperson for the Eastern Theatre Command, stated, “This serves as a serious warning to ‘Taiwan Independence’ separatist forces and external interference forces.”

In response, Taiwan’s government has condemned the military exercises. A spokesperson for the presidential office urged China to reconsider its actions, warning that such provocations undermine regional peace. Taiwan’s defence ministry reported that its military remains on high alert and prepared to conduct “rapid response exercises” in the event that the drills escalate into an actual attack.

Taiwan has consistently rejected China’s claims of sovereignty, asserting that only its people can determine the island’s future. The situation has led to a state of heightened military readiness, with reports indicating that two Chinese military aircraft and eleven naval vessels were operating around the island within the past 24 hours.

Regional Reactions and Implications

Despite the escalated military activities, Taiwan’s stock market demonstrated resilience, reporting a 0.6% increase to reach a record high during morning trading on the day of the drills. Public sentiment reflects a mix of concern and determination, as many citizens express confidence in the island’s ability to navigate the geopolitical challenges. One teacher in Taipei, Lin Wei-ming, remarked, “I think these drills are just meant to scare us… the political side of things can only be handled by Taiwan’s current government and how they choose to respond.”

As part of its military messaging, China has released posters depicting its capabilities and asserting its position regarding Taiwan. The graphics illustrate a range of military vessels and tactics that suggest a focus on potentially sealing off Taiwan’s ports, notably the deep-water Port of Keelung and Kaohsiung, the island’s largest port city.
