A coalition of council candidates in Dunedin has formed an alliance named The People’s Hub to promote shared values such as climate action and social justice. This group comprises 15 candidates for the Dunedin City Council and five candidates for the Otago Regional Council. Their objective is to present a credible progressive alternative for Dunedin’s governance.

The candidates gathered at the corner of George Street and Moray Place on March 14, 2024, to discuss their progressive initiatives and to encourage local residents to participate in the upcoming elections. Regional council candidate Alex King initiated the collaboration, aiming to help voters identify candidates who align with their values.

“Sorting through the candidates can be quite challenging,” Mr. King noted. “It’s important for voters to recognize those who share similar perspectives.” The list of candidates includes endorsements from prominent parties such as the Labour Party and the Green Party, as well as support from the Radical Action Faction and Building Kotahitaka. Several independent candidates are also part of the coalition.

As a first-time candidate, Mr. King expressed that valuable lessons have already emerged from this initiative. “Next time, we’ll start earlier and approach things more comprehensively,” he stated. “We have a fantastic lineup of 20 candidates participating in the hub.”

Key Issues Highlighted by Candidates

Dunedin mayoral and city council candidate for the Green Party, Mickey Treadwell, emphasized the importance of forward-thinking and being prepared for potential consequences of policy decisions. Additionally, city council candidate Heike Cebulla-Elder advocated for reducing traffic speeds to enhance safety.

The candidates have also expressed interest in reviving the Southerner passenger train service, aiming to restore it as a regular transit option. Mr. King articulated a desire for a younger city council, suggesting that rejuvenation could bring fresh ideas to local governance.

The full list of candidates aligned with The People’s Hub includes: Jett Groshinski, Lachlan Akers, Ruthven Allimrac, Rose Finnie, Lily Warring, Mr. Treadwell, Evelyn Robertson, Cyndee Elder, Anna Knight, Rachel Brazil, Richard Knights, Ms. Cebulla-Elder, Cr Steve Walker, Cr Marie Laufiso, and Jen Olsen. The regional council candidates include Elliot Weir, James Cockle, Mr. King, Phil Glassey, and Alan Somerville.

The formation of The People’s Hub reflects a growing movement within Dunedin aimed at addressing pressing social and environmental issues, offering voters a clear choice in the upcoming elections.
