Dunedin Protesters Demand Action on Healthcare Shortages
Protesters in Dunedin rallied on October 14, 2023, to urge the government to address critical healthcare shortages affecting the nation. Approximately 70 individuals marched from the Dunedin Dental School to the Octagon as part of the nationwide “Hikoi for Our Health” campaign. This movement highlights the pressing issues within the New Zealand health system, drawing attention to the urgent need for reform.
Malcolm Mulholland, chairman of Patient Voice Aotearoa and lead organizer of the hikoi, expressed satisfaction with the turnout in Dunedin. He emphasized the broader issue of understaffing in hospitals across the country. “There were some very startling figures that I saw before I arrived here about how short-staffed Dunedin Hospital is,” Mulholland remarked, reflecting on the alarming state of healthcare resources.
Highlighting the Buller Declaration
The hikoi showcased the Buller Declaration on the State of the New Zealand Health System, a document asserting that the health system is in crisis and requires immediate government intervention. This declaration has garnered significant public support, with over 60,000 signatures collected to date. Mulholland noted that the declaration currently measures approximately 150 meters long, but is expected to grow to between 250 meters and 280 meters by the time it is presented to Parliament on November 18.
Launched in September 2022, the Buller Declaration gained traction after plans to cut healthcare services in Westport were leaked. The document highlights that rural communities, Māori populations, and low-income families are disproportionately affected by the ongoing healthcare crisis. Mulholland encouraged individuals to continue signing the declaration on the Patient Voice Aotearoa website.
Nationwide Movement
The Dunedin hikoi was one of several events across New Zealand, with a similar gathering taking place in Invercargill on the same day. Additional events are planned in cities including Timaru, Christchurch, and various locations in the North Island. As the campaign gains momentum, organizers aim to amplify their message ahead of the upcoming parliamentary presentation of the Buller Declaration.
The growing support for the hikoi reflects widespread concern about the state of healthcare in New Zealand. As citizens rally for change, the impact of these protests may play a crucial role in shaping future healthcare policies.
