Former Councillor Roly Fitzgerald Celebrated for Māori Ward Advocacy
Former Palmerston North city councillor Roly Fitzgerald received recognition for his pivotal role in preserving the city’s Māori wards. Although Fitzgerald lost his seat in the October 2022 local body elections, he returned to the council chamber this week for a farewell tribute, highlighting his significant contributions to the community.
At the farewell, Councillor Lorna Johnson emphasized that the successful vote to retain the Māori wards, which was included in a referendum alongside the elections, stands as Fitzgerald’s enduring legacy. Johnson noted, “While we were all campaigning to get re-elected, his focus was on whether we would get the Māori ward vote.” She praised his commitment to ensuring that Māori representation would continue beyond the 2028 elections.
Councillor Brent Barrett lauded Fitzgerald’s conduct, stating that it contributed to “a brilliant first chapter” for the Te Pūao Māori ward. Barrett recalled Fitzgerald’s impactful presence outside the council chamber, where he delivered compelling speeches at Local Government New Zealand meetings and a parliamentary select committee advocating against the need for a referendum on Māori wards.
Fitzgerald’s successor, Councillor Bonnie Kuru, expressed gratitude for the strong example he set as a leader. Many councillors referenced Fitzgerald’s professional background as a housing project manager at the Te Tihi o Ruahine Whānau Ora Alliance Charitable Trust. Deputy Mayor Debi Marshall-Lobb, who was elected alongside Fitzgerald in 2022, reflected on the privilege of working with him and commended his efforts in assisting families to secure stable housing.
Councillor Lew Findlay acknowledged Fitzgerald’s dedication to addressing homelessness, stating, “You don’t only talk about it – you do it.” This sentiment echoed Fitzgerald’s deep commitment to his community, advocating for families to have homes where they could feel secure.
In response to the outpouring of tributes, Fitzgerald expressed humility and gratitude. He acknowledged the tireless efforts of fellow councillors and volunteers involved in the Keep Māori Wards campaign, which successfully ensured a majority vote for the wards’ retention. Fitzgerald also thanked his employer for supporting his council work, allowing him to focus on his mission of providing housing stability.
As he transitions back into his housing role, Fitzgerald shared his passion for the work, stating that it brings him joy to hand keys to families, helping them secure their own homes. His legacy in the council and commitment to community welfare will likely resonate for years to come.
