Hoiho Surge Past Kāhu as Pizzey Shines in 73-59 Victory
The Southern Hoiho secured a decisive victory over the Northern Kāhu, winning 73-59 in Auckland on March 10, 2024. This match marked a notable moment for the Jacobs sisters, as Claire played against her twin sister, Amy, for just the second time in their basketball careers. Claire’s performance helped the Hoiho remain undefeated against the Kāhu, improving her record to two wins in two contests.
After falling behind at halftime, the Hoiho rallied in the second half, demonstrating strong teamwork and defensive prowess. Bec Pizzey, who missed the previous match due to an ankle injury, made a significant impact with 20 points, nine rebounds, and four assists. Paige Bradley also contributed notably, scoring 11 points and providing nine assists, alongside five steals that bolstered the Hoiho’s defense.
The Kāhu started strong, jumping to a 14-6 lead early in the game. However, the Hoiho responded effectively, with Lil Dart hitting a critical three-pointer to narrow the gap. The first quarter ended with the Kāhu leading by just two points.
As the game progressed, the physicality of both teams intensified, especially in the second quarter. Erin Bollmann and Tahlia Tupaea made notable contributions for the Kāhu, helping them maintain a 31-23 lead at halftime. The Kāhu’s defense was effective, but the Hoiho came back strong after the break.
In the third quarter, the Hoiho shifted momentum dramatically, outscoring the Kāhu 25-15. With increased defensive pressure, they managed to take a 48-43 lead, thanks to a series of crucial plays including a three-pointer from Claire Jacobs that extended their advantage to 11 points.
Despite attempts by the Kāhu to close the gap, including back-to-back stops, the Hoiho maintained their lead. Pizzey’s scoring and Bradley’s playmaking were instrumental in solidifying the victory. Dart’s performance off the bench added depth to the Hoiho’s attack, culminating in a total of 19 points.
The final score highlighted the Hoiho’s dominance in the second half, as they improved their season record and left the Kāhu still searching for their first win. As the season progresses, the Hoiho will look to build on this momentum while the Kāhu aim to regroup and find their footing in upcoming matches.
