Labour MP Accuses Te Pāti Māori of Exclusion in Language Use
Labour MP Shanan Halbert has criticized Te Pāti Māori co-leader Rawiri Waititi for creating an “exclusive bunch of Māori” by responding exclusively in te reo Māori during a recent media appearance. This event marked Waititi’s first public outing at Parliament following recent controversial remarks made by MP Tākuta Ferris. Halbert expressed concern that such actions might alienate non-fluent speakers of the language.
Halbert, who identifies as a speaker of English and a “bit of te reo Māori,” emphasized the importance of inclusivity in language use. “At a personal level, we speak both languages,” he stated. He further articulated his belief that it is crucial to bring all Māori into the conversation about their language journey.
“My own journey has spanned 20 years,” Halbert explained. “Some of my friends are only just starting, while others are completely fluent.” He noted that the current week, which celebrates Te Wiki o te Reo Māori, should be about recognizing and celebrating the different stages of language acquisition among individuals.
Halbert’s comments come in the wake of the recent Tamaki Makaurau by-election, where he played a significant role in Labour’s campaign, which ultimately did not succeed. The seat was won by Oriini Kaipara, the candidate from Te Pāti Māori.
Critics argue that Waititi’s approach may inadvertently hinder the efforts of those who are not fluent in te reo Māori. Halbert’s insistence on bilingual communication reflects a broader desire for inclusivity within the Māori community. He hopes to encourage ongoing participation in the language’s revival, spotlighting the importance of accessible dialogue for all Māori.
This exchange illustrates the ongoing conversation about language, identity, and belonging in New Zealand. As the country continues to navigate these issues, the role of political leaders in fostering inclusivity will remain a critical topic.
