Maurice Williamson Pledges to Combat Wasteful Spending in Auckland
Maurice Williamson, the incumbent councillor for Howick ward, is seeking re-election to the Auckland Council. With nearly 40 years of service to the Auckland community, Williamson emphasizes his commitment to responsible fiscal management and reducing wasteful spending. His candidacy reflects a deep-rooted connection to the area, having previously served as the Member of Parliament for Pakuranga from 1987 to 2017 and as the Consul General to the United States from 2017 to 2020.
Williamson’s recent tenure on the council has been marked by significant achievements. He was appointed chair of the Revenue, Expenditure and Value for Money Committee, where he played a vital role in identifying $332 million in unnecessary expenditures as of August 2024. His focus on financial prudence comes at a time when many residents are feeling the strain of rising costs and reduced services.
In September 2024, Williamson took on additional responsibilities by joining the board of Auckland Transport (AT). His goal is to shift the organization’s priorities from predominantly public transport and cycling initiatives to better address the needs of motorists. With approximately 92 percent of Howick residents using private vehicles as their main mode of transport, he argues that transport policies should reflect this reality.
Williamson is outspoken about the challenges facing local residents, particularly with respect to rising rates. He opposes the current trial of a bi-weekly rubbish collection system, asserting that core services like rubbish collection should remain reliable and accessible. He expresses concern over what he describes as “woke ideology” influencing council policies, asserting that practical solutions are necessary to meet the community’s basic needs.
“I will always opt for common-sense policies over ideological trends,” Williamson stated. “Residents deserve a council where every dollar of their hard-earned rates is spent wisely, with significantly less waste.”
His campaign is grounded in the belief that council spending must focus on core services rather than a variety of non-essential issues. Williamson is calling upon the residents of Howick to support his re-election bid, promising to prioritize their needs and advocate for fiscal responsibility if he retains his position.
As the election approaches, Williamson’s strong stance against wasteful spending resonates with many voters who are concerned about financial management within the council. His experience and dedication to the community position him as a candidate ready to tackle the pressing issues facing Howick and wider Auckland.
