New Zealand Ministry Aids Citizen Detained in US Facility
The New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFAT) is providing assistance to a citizen currently detained in the United States. Contrary to earlier media reports, the ministry clarified that the individual is not being held in an immigration facility.
Recent discussions were sparked by a social media post alleging that a New Zealander had been awaiting sentencing in an American prison since August 2023. The post claimed the individual was accused of assaulting a police officer, but a judge subsequently overturned the charge. Following this development, the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) became involved.
In a statement, a spokesperson from MFAT confirmed the situation: “Consular officials are providing assistance to a New Zealander in detention in the United States. Note, this is not an immigration facility, as has been incorrectly reported. For privacy reasons, no further information will be provided.”
Background on Recent Detentions
This case marks the second instance of a New Zealander being detained in the United States in recent months. Earlier this year, Sarah Shaw and her six-year-old son were stopped while attempting to re-enter the US from Canada. The pair had just dropped off Shaw’s other children for a flight in Vancouver.
After a three-week period, they returned home to Washington, DC, “in good spirits,” according to reports. This incident raised concerns regarding the treatment of New Zealand citizens in US custody, prompting inquiries into the nature of the detentions.
The MFAT’s involvement underscores the importance of consular support for citizens facing legal challenges abroad. As the situation develops, the ministry continues to monitor the case closely while maintaining the privacy of the individual involved.
