Earlier this year, Sarah Shaw and her six-year-old son were stopped while attempting to re-enter the US from Canada. The pair had just dropped off Shaw’s other children for a flight in Vancouver.

After a three-week period, they returned home to Washington, DC, “in good spirits,” according to reports. This incident raised concerns regarding the treatment of New Zealand citizens in US custody, prompting inquiries into the nature of the detentions.
