New Zealand’s Pakistani Community Celebrates Independence Day

Over the weekend, New Zealand’s Pakistani community marked Pakistan Independence Day with vibrant celebrations in major cities, including Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch. The events, held on August 14, commemorated the struggle for independence from British colonial rule, which resulted in the creation of Pakistan and India in 1947. Each year, Pakistanis and individuals of Pakistani heritage around the globe come together to honor this significant historical moment.
The celebrations featured a mix of cultural activities, such as flag-hoisting ceremonies, poetry recitals, and performances showcasing traditional music and dance. Video screenings and patriotic songs added to the festive atmosphere, allowing attendees to reconnect with their heritage.
Asif Saeed Khan, president of the Pakistan Association of New Zealand, emphasized the importance of these commemorative events for future generations. “It is crucial to pass on the value of hard-won freedom to our children,” he stated.
Faisal Aziz Ahmed, the Pakistan High Commissioner, praised New Zealand’s multicultural environment during his address at the celebrations. “People here have a tremendous amount of empathy… [it’s] a place where democracy works, where multiculturalism works,” he remarked. He acknowledged the long-standing relationship between New Zealand and Pakistan, citing comments from Prime Minister Christopher Luxon. Ahmed expressed admiration for the Kiwi Pakistani community, highlighting their unique blend of cultural pride and New Zealand identity.
“The Kiwi Pakistani community has surprised and amazed me the most,” he noted. “They carry in their hearts love for Pakistan, but are essentially Kiwis in their outlook, individuality, egalitarianism, and their care for humanity.” He added that despite their smaller numbers, the community plays a vital role in New Zealand’s security, development, and prosperity.
In Christchurch, the president of the Pakistan Association of Canterbury, Ishtiaq Ahmed, appreciated the community’s efforts to showcase their culture and unity. The celebration provided a platform to honor local heroes who have made significant contributions to New Zealand society.
“We are very proud to see our community heroes doing so well in New Zealand,” Khan shared. He mentioned notable figures such as Muhammad Abbas, who has made his debut with the Black Caps cricket team; Haris Zeb, a player for the Auckland City Football Club; and Muhammad Usama Nasir, a familiar actor on the popular television drama Shortland Street.
In Wellington, Asma Azhar, president of the Pakistan Association of Wellington, welcomed representatives from various Pakistani community organizations to join the celebrations.
Hina Nasir, a Pakistani Kiwi who attended events in both Auckland and Wellington, expressed her belief in the power of such gatherings. “These events bring communities together, strengthen social cohesion, and keep traditions alive,” she stated. Nasir highlighted that the celebrations instill pride in the next generation and serve as a reminder to the diaspora that both Aotearoa New Zealand and Pakistan can be considered their collective home.
Overall, the Independence Day celebrations in New Zealand showcased a deep sense of community, cultural pride, and a commitment to preserving the legacy of Pakistan’s independence for future generations.
