Ngira Simmonds Questions Leadership at Te Pāti Māori AGM
Ngira Simmonds, a former spokesperson for Kiingitanga, publicly challenged the leadership of Te Pāti Māori during the party’s annual general meeting (AGM) held on March 3, 2024, at Waiatuhi marae in Rotorua. Simmonds questioned whether the current leadership was capable of uniting the party, referring to the political landscape as a “house of lions” while probing into the true strength of its members.
The AGM saw approximately 200 attendees, although it was noted to be a streamlined version of past meetings. In his address, Simmonds did not shy away from criticism, targeting specific members of the leadership while seeking clarity on their effectiveness and vision for the future of the party. His remarks highlighted a growing sentiment of dissatisfaction among some party members regarding the direction and unity of Te Pāti Māori.
In response to Simmonds’ assertions, co-leader Rawiri Waititi emphasized the need for unity in the face of external challenges. He reminded attendees that the primary adversary they should focus on is the government, not each other. Waititi’s comments aimed to redirect the conversation towards collaboration and collective effort within the party.
The AGM’s pōwhiri, a traditional welcoming ceremony, concluded a day marked by spirited discussions. The event reflected the ongoing tensions within Te Pāti Māori, as members navigate their roles and responsibilities in a complex political environment.
Simmonds’ challenge to the leadership may signal a pivotal moment for the party as it prepares for upcoming political engagements. The discussions raised at the AGM could influence the direction of Te Pāti Māori and its strategies as they work to strengthen their position in New Zealand’s political landscape.
