Oamaru’s New Event Centre Receives $175,000 Boost
The Waitaki Event Centre Trust has secured a significant financial boost with a donation of $175,000 from the Oamaru Licensing Trust, facilitated by the Lion Foundation. This contribution marks the largest single donation from the licensing trust in the past 25 years, according to grants committee chairman Ali Brosnan. He emphasized that the event centre will be “a big plus for Oamaru,” indicating its potential to enhance the town’s community and economic landscape.
Brosnan highlighted the existing local accommodations that will support visitors to the centre, mentioning the North Star and Brydone Hotel, which together offer 66 rooms. He noted, “We’re looking forward to it [the centre opening],” underscoring the anticipated positive impact on local hospitality and catering services. Brosnan expressed satisfaction in contributing to the community, stating, “It’s quite satisfying to be able to help people out.”
Completion Timeline and Community Impact
The event centre, equipped with retractable seating for nearly 300 people, is on track for completion despite recent weather-related delays in landscaping. Waitaki Event Centre Trust chairman Kevin Malcolm confirmed that the trust expects to receive the keys by the end of this month. He stated, “For all intents and purposes, the completion date is still on,” adding that adjustments may be necessary if adverse weather conditions persist.
Malcolm praised the collaborative efforts of local contractors and Apollo Projects, saying they are “doing a tremendous job and pushing like mad” to meet the timeline. The facility is set to become operational in time for the winter sports season, which will further contribute to community activities and local tourism.
While the centre’s initial phase is nearing completion, the Waitaki Event Centre Trust is actively engaged in fundraising efforts for the second stage, which will involve the construction of a grandstand. This ongoing initiative reflects the trust’s commitment to enhancing the event centre’s capabilities and ensuring it serves as a valuable asset for Oamaru and its residents.
The combination of financial support, local enthusiasm, and a clear vision for the future positions the Waitaki Event Centre as a promising development for the region, poised to attract visitors and foster community engagement.
