Pamela Taylor Promises Reduced Rates and Fiscal Responsibility in Dunedin

In the race for mayor of Dunedin, Pamela Taylor has launched a campaign focused on fiscal responsibility and community priorities. Taylor aims to address the rising rates and deepening debt that have become pressing concerns for residents. Her platform emphasizes a thorough review of council spending and a commitment to restoring trust in local governance.
Commitment to Ratepayers
As Dunedin grapples with financial challenges, Taylor’s central message is clear: it is time for leadership that prioritizes ratepayers. She plans to implement a comprehensive review of the council’s financial practices, scrutinizing contracts and budgets to identify waste and inefficiencies. This initiative will be spearheaded by Taylor, along with Lee Vandervis, who will serve as Deputy Mayor.
Her “Reduce Rates Dunedin” strategy aims to cut forecasted rates and decrease the city’s borrowing by optimizing capital and operational expenses. Taylor believes that a focus on essential services is crucial until Dunedin can return to a surplus.
Addressing Infrastructure Needs
A significant part of Taylor’s campaign is her commitment to address the deteriorating infrastructure in Dunedin, particularly the sewage issues on Surrey Street. The ongoing sewage overflows have raised health concerns for residents and businesses alike. Taylor has pledged to make urgent investments in South Dunedin’s wastewater infrastructure to rectify these chronic issues.
In addition, her campaign critiques the current plan to establish a new landfill at Smooth Hill, which is projected to cost $150 million. Taylor argues for an alternative solution: utilizing the existing landfill in Winton. She believes this approach is not only cost-effective but also safer, as it avoids the risks associated with the proposed site.
Financial Strategy for a Sustainable Future
Pamela Taylor’s vision extends beyond immediate cost-cutting measures. She aims to restore Dunedin to a surplus within her first term as mayor by implementing a bold financial strategy. This includes addressing major expenditures that have contributed to the city’s rising debt and unsustainable rates.
By fostering an environment conducive to business growth and reducing bureaucratic hurdles, Taylor seeks to enhance Dunedin’s economic potential. She plans to engage with local business leaders and education experts to ensure that council decisions reflect the needs of the community.
Taylor asserts that her leadership style is grounded in collaboration, accountability, and a deep commitment to the people of Dunedin. “I am not a career politician. I am a community advocate who listens and acts decisively,” she stated.
As the election date approaches, Taylor urges residents to recognize the significance of their vote. With the deadline for ballot submissions set for October 7, 2023, she emphasizes the importance of electing a candidate who is committed to delivering real change and fiscal discipline in Dunedin.
“When you vote for me, you are voting for a future where we can build a city that is not only affordable but also one we can all be proud of,” Taylor concluded. Her campaign encapsulates a promise to lead Dunedin into a new era of responsible governance focused on the needs and freedoms of its residents.
