Penetaui Kleskovic Aims for National Politics with NZ First

Penetaui Kleskovic, the son of New Zealand MP Shane Jones, is setting his sights on a career in national politics. He aims to follow in his father’s footsteps by aligning himself with New Zealand First. Kleskovic, who also serves as the general manager for the Te Aupōuri iwi, recently sought re-election for the Far North District Council in the Ngā Tai o Tokerau Māori Ward. Provisional results indicate that he will not retain his council seat.
Following this setback, Kleskovic expressed his desire to transition into national politics. In an interview with the Herald, he stated that over the next six months, he plans to consult with close advisors to formulate a strategy for his political ambitions. He reflected on his childhood aspirations, saying, “I always knew as a kid that if I was going to be judged, I didn’t only want it to be by Māori, I wanted it to be judged by five million Kiwis.”
Kleskovic emphasized his strong support for New Zealand First, noting that his political journey has been influenced by his early admiration for the Labour Party. While his recent council campaign did not yield the desired outcome, his ambitions for a broader political role suggest a commitment to engaging with a wider audience beyond local governance.
As he embarks on this new chapter, Kleskovic’s background in community leadership and his familial ties to established political figures may provide a platform for his future endeavors. His engagement with New Zealand First reflects a desire to contribute to national discussions and policies affecting New Zealanders across the country.
Kleskovic’s aspirations come at a time when New Zealand politics is witnessing significant changes and realignments. His plans to enter the national political arena could resonate with voters looking for fresh perspectives and leadership.
