South Taranaki Council Seeks Feedback on Community Space Plan
Residents of South Taranaki have until February 14, 2024, to provide their input on a proposal to permanently close a section of Cambridge Street in Pātea. The South Taranaki District Council is seeking feedback on this initiative, which aims to create a safer and more vibrant pedestrian space at the southern entrance of the town.
The proposed closure would affect a short stretch of Cambridge Street, located between State Highway 3 (SH3) and Dorset Street. This initiative is part of the broader Pātea town revitalization program, designed to enhance the town’s amenities, safety, and community connectivity.
Revitalization Efforts and Community Engagement
The idea of transforming this area into a community space was first outlined in the 2019 Pātea Town Masterplan. The masterplan highlighted the need for safer pedestrian zones, improved public spaces, and stronger connections between the town centre, the river, and the beach. Following this, the Pātea Co-Design Group, comprising representatives from local iwi, hapū, community members, and council staff, has worked diligently to develop a concrete plan.
Rob Haveswood, the Community Services Group Manager, emphasized the importance of this proposal, stating, “This proposal supports the community’s long-term vision for Pātea by creating a more people-friendly town entrance. It’s about improving safety while giving locals and visitors a more attractive public place to gather and connect.”
Residents are encouraged to share their thoughts on the proposal through a feedback form available at the Pātea LibraryPlus, the council office in Hāwera, or online at www.southtaranaki.com/consultations.
Community Impact and Future Plans
The initiative reflects a concerted effort to foster a sense of community and enhance the overall appeal of Pātea. The planned closure of Cambridge Street is not only about improving pedestrian safety but also aims to create a welcoming environment for both residents and visitors.
As the council awaits community feedback, the outcome of this proposal could significantly impact Pātea’s future, aligning with the town’s vision for a connected and vibrant community. Local residents are urged to take part in this consultation process, ensuring their voices contribute to shaping the future of their town.
