Teen Overcomes Trauma After Sexual Assaults, Finds Hope and Healing
A young woman from Auckland has shared her journey from being a victim of sexual assault to finding hope and healing in the aftermath of her traumatic experiences. Over the past four years, she has faced immense challenges, including navigating the complexities of the justice system and confronting her attackers in court. Now 19 years old, she reflects on her past with resilience and optimism.
In early 2022, the teen, then just 15, was assaulted by Charlie Ngapera, who took her to Maraetai Beach under false pretenses. After a brief trip to get food, he sexually violated her in his car, an experience that left her feeling utterly powerless. Following this incident, she encountered further trauma when she was raped multiple times by a group of young men, including Teina Takimoana and Arthur Te Wera.
Facing her attackers in court, the young woman had to recount her harrowing experiences multiple times, reliving the trauma as she testified. Ngapera, initially charged with rape, defended against a reduced charge, while Te Wera pleaded guilty to his involvement in the pack rape. Takimoana denied the charges during his trial, forcing the teen to confront her fears in front of a judge, jury, and the defendant himself.
Finding Strength in Healing
Despite the weight of her past, the young woman is now focused on her recovery and future. Living overseas, she has made significant strides in rebuilding her life. “I think I’m doing really well,” she stated, acknowledging that while the pain of her past is still present, she has found ways to cope and heal.
She is pursuing her dreams in a field she has always aspired to join and is working towards higher qualifications. Additionally, she has set goals related to business and investing, emphasizing the importance of mental health and exercise in her daily routine. “I’m also doing a lot of reading and a lot of research about my health,” she added.
Family support has played a crucial role in her healing process, and she is currently seeking assistance from the Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC) for ongoing support. Although she still experiences nightmares and anxiety, she focuses on not allowing her past to dictate her future, stating, “If I let those things stress me out, then I’m just doing more harm to myself.”
Confronting the Justice System
The teen expressed her disappointment with the sentences handed down to her attackers, describing them as “messed up.” In March 2024, Te Wera was sentenced to seven years and nine months in prison, while Takimoana received six years in November of the same year. Ngapera was sentenced to two years and nine months in September 2023. The young woman believes these sentences do not adequately reflect the severity of the crimes committed against her.
She emphasized the importance of sharing her story, stating, “If you don’t say anything, you will regret it later down the track.” Her determination to speak out has become a source of strength, allowing her to reclaim her narrative.
Reflecting on her journey, the young woman acknowledges the profound effects of her experiences but is resolute in her decision to move forward. “I’ve needed to change how I look at things. I think it’s made me stronger,” she explained. “I’m over here, doing what I love, and they’re in jail. They might not be in there for long, but I’ve come so far in life, and they just won’t.”
Through her resilience and commitment to healing, she serves as an inspiration to others who may be facing similar challenges, reminding them that it is possible to find strength and hope after trauma.
