Teen Overcomes Trauma to Seek Justice and Find Hope
A 19-year-old from Auckland has emerged from a traumatic past marked by sexual violence to pursue healing and a promising future. After enduring two harrowing sexual assaults, she bravely testified against her attackers in court and is now focused on rebuilding her life.
A Journey Through Trauma and the Justice System
When she was just 15 years old, the young woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, faced a series of life-altering events. The first assault occurred when Charlie Ngapera, then 42, lured her to a secluded area under false pretenses and sexually violated her. This incident was compounded later that year when she was subjected to a brutal pack rape by multiple assailants, including Teina Takimoana and Arthur Te Wera.
Despite the trauma, the teenager displayed remarkable courage by providing testimony in court against her attackers. In both cases, she was forced to recount the horrifying details of her experiences, facing the men who had stripped her of her innocence and forced her to relive her pain.
Ngapera, who was initially charged with rape, was ultimately convicted of a lesser offense, while Takimoana contested his charges unsuccessfully at trial. In the courtroom, the young woman faced intense scrutiny, which added to her emotional burden. She described the experience of testifying as deeply distressing, stating, “I had to watch my police videos again, and watching those was always the hardest part.”
Finding Strength and Hope
With the legal proceedings behind her, the young survivor is finding strength in her healing journey. Now living overseas, she expresses pride in her progress, stating, “I think I’m doing really well.” She is actively working in an industry she has long aspired to join and is pursuing further qualifications.
The teen is also focusing on her mental health and well-being. “I’m doing a lot of reading and research about my health and hormones,” she explains. She acknowledges that while the past still weighs on her, she is committed to managing her trauma rather than allowing it to define her life.
Despite experiencing nightmares and moments of fear, she has found a supportive network in her family and is seeking ongoing assistance through a sensitive claim with the Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC). The change in her environment has significantly contributed to her recovery, as she notes, “It’s way better here than in New Zealand. I had too many bad memories there.”
Reflecting on her past, she remarked, “I no longer recognize the broken girl who once sat in those Auckland courtrooms.” Following the trials, she felt an overwhelming sense of disappointment at the sentences her attackers received: seven years and nine months for Te Wera, six years for Takimoana, and two years and nine months for Ngapera. She described the outcomes as “messed up,” considering the profound impact of their actions on her life.
Despite these challenges, she expresses no regrets about pursuing justice. “I feel like it’s one of those things that if you don’t say anything, you will regret it later down the track. You need to tell your story,” she asserts. Her determination to overcome adversity is evident as she strives to live life on her own terms, stating, “I’m over here, doing what I love, and they’re in jail.”
Her journey highlights not only the importance of seeking justice but also the power of resilience and hope. As she moves forward, the young woman’s story serves as a reminder that healing is possible, and support is available for those affected by similar traumas.
“If I let those things stress me out, then I’m just doing more harm to myself.”
