Wairarapa Police Boost Holiday Staffing to Ensure New Year Safety
Wairarapa police have increased their staffing levels during the holiday period to enhance safety for residents and visitors celebrating the New Year. This decision follows reports of a rise in antisocial behaviour at the popular holiday destination, Riversdale Beach, during Labour Weekend. The additional police presence coincides with a temporary alcohol ban imposed by the Masterton District Council for both Riversdale Beach and Castlepoint.
Enhanced Measures for Holiday Celebrations
Inspector Paul Hamlyn, acting Wairarapa Area Commander, stated that police are preparing for an influx of people in the Riversdale Beach area as the New Year approaches. “Police will have extra staff in the region over the holiday period to ensure that people can celebrate accordingly, while also ensuring the safety of everybody there,” he explained. The inspector emphasized the importance of responsible behaviour, urging those who consume alcohol to avoid driving.
The alcohol ban is effective immediately, remaining in place until the morning of New Year’s Day. Inspector Hamlyn acknowledged the recent incidents of antisocial behaviour and encouraged the public to report any suspicious or illegal activities to the authorities.
Masterton Mayor Bex Johnson extended her New Year wishes to the community while echoing the police’s safety message. “I’d like to acknowledge and thank our local police for the great work they do to keep our community safe,” she said. Johnson advised parents to monitor their teenagers’ whereabouts during the festivities, highlighting the need to maintain safety while having fun.
Public Safety Restrictions in Effect
The Masterton District Council has also reminded the public of ongoing safety restrictions. Road closures and alcohol-free zones are established at both Castlepoint and Riversdale to ensure a safe environment for all beachgoers during the New Year celebrations. These measures will remain in effect until 06:00 on New Year’s Day, with residents and visitors within the closed areas required to provide proof of address for vehicular access.
In early December, the council adopted an alcohol bylaw, with plans for a comprehensive review scheduled for 2026. The review aims to assess whether the current regulations adequately address alcohol-related crime and disorder. Reports of alcohol-fueled antisocial behaviour at Riversdale Beach over Labour Weekend raised concerns among residents regarding the enforcement of temporary bans.
During the recent disturbances, police responded promptly and have since engaged with local residents and Mayor Johnson to discuss future enforcement strategies. The council plans to consult the community next year regarding their experiences with alcohol-related issues during critical holiday periods. Residents will be asked for their opinions on potentially embedding the temporary alcohol-free zones into the bylaw permanently, aiming to provide greater clarity for law enforcement and improve administrative efficiency.
Council officers are expected to report back in February with recommendations for the review process, which will involve significant community input. Inspector Hamlyn advised that anyone witnessing concerning incidents should call 111 for immediate assistance or 105 to report less urgent matters.
These proactive measures reflect a community-focused approach to ensuring a safe and enjoyable celebration for all during the New Year period.
