Billionaire Andrew Forrest’s $70 Million Superyacht Docks in Lyttelton
A luxurious superyacht valued at $70 million, owned by Australian billionaire Andrew “Twiggy” Forrest, has docked in Lyttelton Harbour. The vessel, known as the Pangaea Ocean Explorer, arrived on December 19, 2023, after a stop in Nelson. The purpose of this visit remains unclear, prompting speculation among local observers.
The 58-metre yacht, originally built in 1999, has undergone significant modifications to serve as a research vessel for the Minderoo Foundation, a philanthropic organization founded by Forrest and his former wife, Nicola. The vessel plays a crucial role in the foundation’s ambitious $100 million initiative called “Flourishing Oceans,” which aims to study and protect marine life globally.
Forrest, who holds a PhD in Marine Science from the University of Western Australia, awarded in 2019, has equipped the yacht with advanced laboratories and specialized research tools. These facilities are designed to track fishing patterns and address the pressing issue of ocean plastic pollution. Interestingly, the yacht has also served as a luxury vacation spot, featuring amenities such as a waterslide, which was notably used during a family trip in 2019.
The Pangaea Ocean Explorer can accommodate up to 12 guests and 13 crew members, with estimated annual operating costs reaching $4 million. According to the Superyacht Fan website, the vessel’s current value is approximately $40 million.
Forrest, whose estimated net worth stands at $26 billion, has substantial business interests in New Zealand. His company, Fortescue Future Industries, has made investments in local innovations such as the Christchurch-based hydrogen technology startup Fabrum. The company has also competed for the Southern Green Hydrogen project in Southland, showcasing Forrest’s commitment to advancing sustainable technologies.
Through the Minderoo Foundation, Forrest has contributed over $2 billion to various causes, including cancer research and environmental initiatives. Although he and Nicola Forrest separated in 2023, they continue to collaborate on philanthropic efforts.
Currently, the Pangaea Ocean Explorer is moored in Lyttelton Harbour, attracting attention from both locals and visitors. As details about the yacht’s activities during its stay remain under wraps, the presence of such a notable figure in the area has certainly sparked interest in the local community.
