Billionaire Andrew Forrest’s $70 Million Superyacht Docks in Lyttelton
A superyacht valued at $70 million, owned by Australian billionaire Andrew “Twiggy” Forrest, has docked in Lyttelton Harbour. The Pangaea Ocean Explorer arrived on December 19, 2023, following its previous stop in Nelson. While the purpose of the visit remains unclear, it has drawn attention due to Forrest’s significant business interests in the region.
The 58-metre vessel, constructed in 1999, has undergone transformations to serve as a research platform for the Minderoo Foundation. This philanthropic organization, which Forrest co-founded with his former wife Nicola Forrest, aims to study and protect marine ecosystems through its ambitious $100 million “Flourishing Oceans” initiative. The yacht is equipped with state-of-the-art laboratories and specialized research tools to monitor global fishing patterns and examine ocean plastic pollution.
Forrest, who holds a PhD in Marine Science from the University of Western Australia, has dedicated considerable resources to environmental causes. Through the Minderoo Foundation, he has contributed over $2 billion to various initiatives, including cancer research and sustainability efforts. Despite separating from Nicola in 2023, the couple continues to collaborate on philanthropic projects.
The Pangaea Ocean Explorer is not solely a research vessel; it has also served as a luxury yacht. During a family trip in 2019, a giant waterslide was noted on its side, showcasing its dual purpose. The yacht can accommodate up to 12 guests and 13 crew members, with annual running costs estimated at $4 million.
Forrest’s business ventures extend into New Zealand, where Fortescue Future Industries has invested in the Christchurch-based hydrogen technology startup Fabrum and has been involved in the Southern Green Hydrogen project in Southland. His significant investments demonstrate a commitment to advancing sustainable technologies in the region.
As the Pangaea Ocean Explorer remains moored in Lyttelton Harbour, its presence serves as a reminder of Forrest’s commitment to marine conservation and his ongoing contributions to environmental initiatives. The yacht’s visit has sparked interest and speculation, underscoring the intersection of luxury and philanthropy in the modern world.
