Billionaire Andrew Forrest’s $70 Million Superyacht Docks in Lyttelton
A superyacht valued at $70 million, owned by Australian billionaire Andrew “Twiggy” Forrest, has docked in Lyttelton Harbour. The vessel, named Pangaea Ocean Explorer, arrived on Friday after its previous stop in Nelson, where it had been moored since December 19, 2023. The exact purpose of its visit to Lyttelton remains unclear.
The 58-metre yacht is notable not only for its luxury but also for its role in research and philanthropy. Forrest, the founder of Fortescue Metals Group and owner of the Perth-based Western Force rugby team, is one of Australia’s wealthiest individuals, with an estimated net worth of $26 billion. His yacht has been repurposed into a research vessel for the Minderoo Foundation, a philanthropic organization founded by Forrest and his former wife, Nicola Forrest.
Research and Philanthropic Ventures
The Pangaea Ocean Explorer is integral to the foundation’s ambitious $100 million “Flourishing Oceans” initiative, aimed at studying and protecting global marine life. Equipped with state-of-the-art laboratories and specialized research tools, the yacht tracks global fishing patterns and investigates the impacts of plastic pollution in oceans.
Despite its scientific capabilities, the yacht also serves as a luxury retreat. A giant waterslide was notably spotted affixed to the side during a family trip in 2019, highlighting its dual purpose as a leisure vessel.
Forrest’s Broader Impact
Currently, the yacht is moored in Lyttelton Harbour, while Forrest continues to expand his business interests in New Zealand. His company, Fortescue Future Industries, has invested in Christchurch-based hydrogen technology startup Fabrum and was a contender for the Southern Green Hydrogen project in Southland.
Forrest’s philanthropic efforts are significant. Through the Minderoo Foundation, he has donated more than $2 billion to various causes, including cancer research and environmental projects. Although Forrest and Nicola Forrest separated in 2023, they maintain a collaborative approach to their philanthropic endeavors.
The Pangaea Ocean Explorer can accommodate up to 12 guests and 13 crew members, with estimated annual operational costs of around $4 million. As the yacht remains in Lyttelton, its next destination and the specifics of its visit continue to generate curiosity.
