Christchurch Crowned Most Bicycle-Friendly City in Asia/Oceania
Christchurch has been named the most bicycle-friendly city in the Asia and Oceania region, according to the latest findings from the Copenhagenize Index. This biennial report evaluates cities worldwide based on how effectively they promote cycling as a safe and convenient mode of transport. Christchurch’s achievement marks a significant milestone, reflecting the city’s dedication to improving cycling infrastructure and community engagement.
In the rankings, Christchurch secured the top position in Asia and Oceania, followed closely by Taipei and Wellington, which ranked third. Globally, Christchurch placed 38th on the international index, highlighting its commitment to making cycling an integral part of urban life. The Copenhagenize Index utilizes evidence-based benchmarks to provide a comprehensive assessment of cycling conditions in cities around the world.
Investment and Community Engagement Drive Success
City officials have expressed pride in the recognition. Jacob Bradbury, the planning and delivery transport manager for Christchurch City Council, emphasized the extensive effort that has gone into creating a cyclist-friendly environment. He noted that the city has made substantial investments in building cycleways and promoting cycling education in recent years.
Bradbury stated, “This is a great result which recognizes how much work has been put in to make the city a friendly place for cyclists.” He added that ongoing resident surveys indicate a significant increase in cycling use, with overall participation rising by more than 40% over the past eight years.
The perception of cycling in Christchurch has also improved dramatically. According to surveys, the proportion of residents who view the city as bicycle-friendly has increased from 38% a decade ago to 67% projected by 2025. Additionally, the percentage of female cyclists has risen, with women now comprising 41% of all cyclists in the inner city, up from 33% eight years ago.
Promoting Cycling Among Youth
The city is actively working to instill a positive attitude toward cycling among younger residents. The Cycle Safe Programme, which teaches cycling skills in schools, has been recognized as one of the best initiatives in New Zealand. This program aims to educate students on the benefits of cycling while ensuring they ride with confidence and awareness of road safety.
Future plans include continued investment in the Major Cycleway network, with additional projects slated to begin in early 2026. Bradbury expressed optimism about these developments, stating that they are essential for maintaining and growing cycling participation in the city.
In comparison, Wellington also made a strong showing in the Copenhagenize Index, ranking third in Asia/Oceania and 47th globally. The regional rankings highlight the ongoing efforts of cities to prioritize cycling as a sustainable mode of transportation.
As cycling gains popularity worldwide, Christchurch’s recognition in the Copenhagenize Index serves as a testament to the city’s commitment to fostering a more bicycle-friendly environment, with lasting benefits for its residents and visitors alike.
