Smartphone Sales Projected to Rise as AI Devices Surge

Global smartphone sales are poised for a modest increase, driven primarily by a surge in demand for AI-enabled devices. According to a recent report from the research firm IDC, global smartphone sales are projected to rise by 1% in 2025, reaching a total of 1.24 billion units. This growth occurs against a backdrop of global economic challenges, with particularly strong demand emerging from markets in the United States, the Middle East, and Africa.
Apple continues to lead the market, with expectations to sell 3.9% more iPhones this year compared to last. This strong performance highlights the brand’s sustained popularity and consumer loyalty, which play a crucial role in its market dominance.
AI-Enabled Devices Set to Dominate Market
The report indicates a significant shift towards AI-enabled smartphones, predicting that 370 million such devices will be sold in 2025, accounting for 30% of total smartphone sales. This figure is expected to escalate dramatically over the next four years, with AI mobiles projected to comprise a staggering 70% of total sales by 2029. This trend signals a growing integration of artificial intelligence into everyday mobile technology, which could reshape consumer expectations and device capabilities.
Additionally, the report outlines a bright future for foldable smartphones. IDC forecasts a 6% year-over-year growth in this category for both 2025 and 2026, followed by an 11% increase in 2027. Despite this optimistic outlook, foldable devices are expected to remain a niche segment, comprising only 3% of total smartphone shipments by 2029.
The growth in smartphone sales, particularly in AI and foldable categories, reflects evolving consumer preferences and the ongoing advancement of mobile technology. As manufacturers adapt to these changes, the landscape of the global smartphone market is set for significant transformation in the coming years.
In summary, while the overall increase in smartphone sales may appear modest, the rise of AI-enabled devices will likely redefine the market, making it a pivotal period for consumers and manufacturers alike.
