Smartphone Sales Set to Rise as AI Phones Gain Traction

Global smartphone sales are projected to experience a modest increase of 1% in 2025, reaching a total of 1.24 billion units, despite ongoing economic challenges. This forecast, provided by research firm IDC, indicates that demand is unexpectedly strong in regions including the United States, the Middle East, and Africa.
Apple continues to lead the market, with expectations to sell 3.9% more iPhones this year compared to 2024. This growth is attributed to the company’s strong brand loyalty and innovative features that resonate well with consumers.
AI-Enabled Phones on the Rise
A significant driver of the sales increase is the growing popularity of AI-enabled smartphones. IDC anticipates that 370 million AI-enabled devices will be sold in 2025, representing about 30% of total smartphone sales for the year. This share is projected to surge to 70% within the next four years, highlighting a transformative shift in consumer preferences towards advanced technology in mobile devices.
The report from IDC also highlights the potential of foldable smartphones. Although still a niche category, foldable phones are expected to see steady growth. IDC projects a 6% year-over-year increase in sales for both 2025 and 2026, followed by an 11% rise in 2027 as the category matures. Despite this growth, foldable phones are anticipated to account for only 3% of total smartphone shipments by 2029.
This data underscores the evolving landscape of the smartphone market, where innovation in artificial intelligence and design continues to shape consumer choices. The anticipated rise in AI-enabled devices reflects a broader trend towards smarter technology that enhances user experience and connectivity.
As the market adapts to these changes, manufacturers will need to focus on integrating advanced features that appeal to a tech-savvy consumer base. The competition among brands will likely intensify as companies seek to capture the growing demand for AI capabilities and innovative designs in the smartphone sector.
In summary, while the global smartphone market faces economic headwinds, the shift towards AI-enabled devices and the potential of foldable phones indicate a dynamic future for mobile technology. The next few years will be critical for manufacturers to align their strategies with consumer demands and technological advancements.
