A-League Transfer Window: Clubs Take Divergent Paths
The opening of the A-League transfer window on October 5, 2023 has seen contrasting strategies adopted by New Zealand’s prominent clubs. The Wellington Phoenix have wasted no time, securing the signing of All White Bill Tuiloma and exploring a potential loan deal for Norwegian midfielder Sander Kartum from Heart of Midlothian. In stark contrast, Auckland FC appears content with its current roster, with coach Steve Corica confirming that no new players will be brought in during the window.
After a decisive 2-0 victory over Brisbane Roar, Corica stated that he believes the Navy Blues possess “good depth and good cover in all areas.” This confidence reflects Auckland’s strong position, currently leading the league with a solid defensive record. Meanwhile, the Phoenix are on a different trajectory, having suffered injuries, notably to playmaker Hideki Isihige, who is sidelined for the season due to a knee injury.
Reports indicate that the 30-year-old Kartum, who joined Hearts in January 2025, may be a key target for the Phoenix. Despite his potential, he has not featured in a Scottish Premier League match this season and has struggled to secure a place in a team that is currently at the top of the league. Phoenix coach Giancarlo Italiano confirmed that discussions regarding future signings are ongoing, but nothing has been finalized. He emphasized the importance of securing a contract before making any public comments.
Adding to the Phoenix’s roster, Tuiloma’s recent acquisition signals a proactive approach. The centre-back will join the team for their upcoming match against second-placed Sydney FC, although Italiano noted that his availability for play is still uncertain. “We really need to assess his physical outputs,” Italiano said, reflecting a cautious approach to player fitness.
In terms of player updates, goalkeeper Josh Oluwayemi may return soon after missing the Adelaide game due to a foot injury. Italiano expressed satisfaction with the performance of 18-year-old goalkeeper Eamonn McCarron, who made a notable save against Adelaide. Additionally, defender Tim Payne has resumed training after a lengthy absence due to a broken collarbone, contributing to a growing sense of optimism within the squad.
As the Phoenix and Auckland FC navigate the season, their defensive strategies stand out. Although the Phoenix have scored 19 goals in 12 games, they have conceded 22, compared to Auckland’s 11 goals against. This difference highlights the contrasting styles of play, with Auckland demonstrating a more effective defensive setup, evidenced by their four clean sheets this season.
The attacking prowess of both clubs has also drawn attention. Both Nigerian forward Ifeanyi Eze of the Phoenix and Auckland’s Sam Cosgrove have each netted five goals this season, contributing significantly to their teams’ performances. Auckland’s Lachlan Brook has also impressed, previously scoring nine goals for Western Sydney Wanderers before joining the club.
Looking ahead, the Phoenix’s recent performances suggest a team capable of overcoming challenges. The emergence of young talent like Luke Brooke-Smith, who made an impact in a recent match, adds depth to their attacking options. Italiano acknowledged the potential of the 17-year-old but tempered expectations regarding his immediate role in the starting lineup.
As the transfer window progresses, the differing approaches of the Phoenix and Auckland FC reflect their respective ambitions. While Auckland FC is focused on maintaining its strong position, the Phoenix aims to bolster its squad in response to injuries and performance fluctuations. The decisions made in the coming weeks could significantly influence both teams as they continue their campaigns in the A-League.
