All Blacks Clinch Victory in Cordoba, Ascend to World No. 1 Ranking
The All Blacks secured a decisive 41-22 victory over Argentina’s Pumas in Cordoba on October 7, 2023. This win not only highlighted their resilience on the field but also propelled them to the top of the World Rugby rankings, following the Wallabies’ unexpected triumph over the Springboks earlier in the day.
Coach Scott Robertson praised his team for their performance, noting the vibrant atmosphere of the match. “It was a great test match, with a great atmosphere,” he remarked during the post-match press conference. The All Blacks established a strong lead of 31-10 by halftime, but Robertson acknowledged issues with discipline that allowed the Pumas to close the gap at one point.
In the first half, the All Blacks displayed clinical efficiency, yet they struggled with handling errors and miscommunication, failing to capitalize on several opportunities within the Pumas’ 22. The second half saw a shift in momentum as defensive lapses allowed Argentina to score two tries, narrowing the deficit to just seven points.
Despite these challenges, the All Blacks rallied in the final 15 minutes. Robertson’s side regained control, scoring two lineout-drive tries through Samisoni Taukei’aho, effectively sealing their victory.
Following the match, Robertson and his team were surprised to learn of their new ranking. “It’s actually something we just learned, because you just told us,” he said. He emphasized the competitive nature of international rugby, noting that “a moment, discipline, a card, great play, two or three tries back to back can turn test matches.”
The All Blacks’ rise to the top was aided by the Wallabies’ remarkable comeback against the Springboks, who had initially led 22-0. Robertson acknowledged the strength of the Pumas, stating, “Argentina were great tonight and defended really, really well, and were passionate—just like the Springboks were too.”
Looking ahead, Robertson expressed a desire for improvement, stating, “You’re never satisfied as an All Black, because there’s always room to improve.” He highlighted the positive aspects of their performance, noting, “The exciting part is we did so much good stuff.”
As the All Blacks prepare for their next match in Buenos Aires, discussions around team selection have begun. Players Tamaiti Williams and Wallace Sititi have been flagged as available for selection. Williams is likely to return directly to the front row, while Sititi may come off the bench after a commendable performance by Tupou Vaa’i at blindside.
The two sides are set to face off again on October 15, 2023, in what promises to be another thrilling encounter. Fans can stay updated by signing up for Ngā Pitopito Kōrero, a daily newsletter delivered straight to their inbox every weekday.
