All Blacks Clinch Victory Over Pumas, Rise to Top of World Rankings

In a decisive match held in Cordoba on March 15, 2024, the All Blacks secured a convincing 41-22 victory against the Pumas. This win not only demonstrated their resilience but also propelled them to the top of the World Rugby rankings following an unexpected upset by the Wallabies over the Springboks in Johannesburg on the same day.
Coach’s Reflections on Performance
After the match, All Blacks coach Scott Robertson expressed pride in his team’s performance while acknowledging areas for improvement. “It was a great test match, with a great atmosphere,” he stated during the post-match press conference. The All Blacks led 31-10 at halftime, but Robertson noted that lapses in discipline allowed Argentina to mount a challenge in the second half.
The All Blacks established a solid lead through a series of clinical plays in the first half. However, they missed multiple scoring opportunities due to handling errors and miscommunication in the attacking zone. As the second half unfolded, the defensive side of their game faltered, allowing the home team to score two tries and narrow the gap to just seven points.
In the final 15 minutes, the All Blacks regained control, scoring two lineout-drive tries by Samisoni Taukei’aho to secure the victory. Despite the win, Robertson emphasized the need for continuous improvement, stating, “You’re never satisfied as an All Black because there’s always room to improve.” He highlighted the team’s potential for growth, saying, “The exciting part is we did so much good stuff.”
Looking Ahead to Future Matches
As the All Blacks prepare for their next encounter in Buenos Aires next Sunday, the focus will be on selection and strategy. Players Tamaiti Williams and Wallace Sititi have been flagged as available, with Williams expected to return to the front row. Sititi’s chances of playing may depend on the performance of Tupou Vaa’i, who has shown impressive form in the blindside position.
Robertson acknowledged the unpredictable nature of test rugby, noting that “a moment, discipline, a card, great play, two or three tries back to back can turn test matches.” He reiterated that while the All Blacks are pleased to be ranked number one, their primary focus remains on their upcoming match rather than rankings.
The All Blacks will face the Pumas again next Sunday morning New Zealand Time, and anticipation is high for what promises to be another thrilling encounter.
