All Blacks Legend Lloyd Ashby Passes Away at 94
Desmond “Lloyd” Ashby, a former rugby player and one of the oldest surviving All Blacks, has passed away at the age of 94. Ashby died at his home in Dunedin on Monday, leaving behind a legacy as a significant figure in New Zealand rugby history.
Ashby played one test match for the All Blacks in 1958 against Australia, marking a brief but noteworthy chapter in his rugby career. He was a prominent member of the Southland team during the 1950s, contributing to the squad’s success with 59 games played. Notably, he was part of the team that won the prestigious Ranfurly Shield in 1959.
Justin Marshall, a distinguished All Blacks player and Ashby’s great-nephew, expressed his sorrow through social media. Marshall, who has played 81 tests for the All Blacks, thanked Ashby for the inspiration he provided throughout his own rugby journey. “A very sad day today,” Marshall wrote on Instagram. “My great-uncle Lloyd Ashby, my Dad’s [Fridge] uncle, passed away.”
Ashby’s contributions to rugby extend beyond his playing days. His passion for the sport and dedication to his teams have inspired generations of players. As a member of the All Blacks, he not only represented New Zealand on the international stage but also embodied the spirit of rugby that many aspire to emulate.
The rugby community has come together to honor Ashby’s memory. Tributes are pouring in, reflecting on his impact on the game and the lives of those who knew him. His passing marks the end of an era for many fans and players who remember him as one of the stalwarts of New Zealand rugby.
Ashby’s legacy will continue through the stories shared by his family and friends and the memories held by fans. His life serves as a testament to the enduring influence of rugby in New Zealand and the bonds it creates across generations.
