All Blacks Legend Lloyd Ashby Passes Away at 94, Remembered by Family
Lloyd Ashby, a notable figure in New Zealand rugby and great-uncle to All Blacks star Justin Marshall, has passed away at the age of 94. Ashby, who died at his home in Dunedin on Monday, was one of the oldest living players to have represented the All Blacks in a test match.
Ashby made his one and only appearance for the All Blacks in 1958 during a match against Australia. His rugby career included a significant tenure with the Southland team, where he played 59 games throughout the 1950s. He was instrumental in Southland’s victory in the Ranfurly Shield in 1959, contributing to the team’s legacy in New Zealand rugby.
Marshall, who went on to play 81 tests for the All Blacks, shared a heartfelt tribute on social media, reflecting on the inspiration Ashby provided throughout his rugby journey. “A very sad day today,” Marshall expressed on Instagram. “My great-uncle Lloyd Ashby, my Dad’s [Fridge] uncle, passed away.”
The loss of Ashby resonates deeply within the rugby community, as he represented a link to the storied past of New Zealand rugby. His contributions on and off the field have left an indelible mark, inspiring generations of players.
The passing of such a revered figure at the age of 94 invites reflections not only on his accomplishments but also on the broader history of rugby in New Zealand. Ashby’s legacy is one that will continue to influence aspiring athletes and rugby fans alike.
