All Blacks Prepare for Tough Battle Against Pumas in Córdoba

The All Blacks are gearing up for a challenging match against Argentina’s Pumas on August 17, 2023, at the Estadio Mario Alberto Kempes in Córdoba. This highly anticipated encounter marks the first time the All Blacks will play a test match in Argentina’s second-largest city, and it promises to be a fiercely contested battle as the Pumas aim for their first-ever victory on home soil against New Zealand.
Fullback Will Jordan expressed his expectations for a passionate performance from the Pumas, who have recently achieved significant victories over top-tier teams, including the All Blacks, Wallabies, Springboks, France, and the British & Irish Lions. “In the Rugby Championship over the last few years, they’ve really challenged us,” said Jordan. He emphasized the importance of the initial stages of the match, stating, “We know the first 20 minutes is going to be important to try and silence what will be a loud home crowd.”
Historic Venue and Atmosphere
The Estadio Mario Alberto Kempes, with a capacity of 57,000, is expected to be filled to the brim for this match. The stadium is named after Argentina’s legendary footballer who played a significant role in the nation’s inaugural FIFA World Cup victory in 1978. The All Blacks had a taste of the local sports culture when several players attended a football match between Boca Juniors and Racing Club in Buenos Aires over the weekend. Jordan remarked on the experience, noting, “It was pretty impressive. The boys were searching up the songs and chants the crowd was singing, and I’m sure it’ll be something similar come Saturday.”
Assistant coach Jason Holland described the opening match of the Rugby Championship as a “massive challenge.” He praised the Pumas for their balanced gameplay and ability to attack effectively across the field. Holland stated, “We know we need to be really accurate with what we do to give them as little attacking opportunities as possible.”
Team Updates and Key Players
The All Blacks are expected to field a near full-strength lineup, although they will still be without injured players Tamaiti Williams and Wallace Sititi. Head coach Scott Robertson confirmed that the pair will not be available until the following week. Fletcher Newell is anticipated to start at prop, while Tupou Vaa’i will continue in his role on the blindside. A point of interest will be who supports Cortez Ratima at halfback, as both Finlay Christie and Kyle Preston are currently injury replacements. Another consideration is the potential inclusion of young wing Leroy Carter, given that Caleb Clarke is sidelined with an ankle injury.
On the Pumas’ side, head coach Felipe Contepomi has brought back key players including Tomas Albornoz, Gonzalo Garcia, Franco Molina, and Joel Sclavi, who were rested during the recent series against England. Albornoz played a crucial role in the Pumas’ breakthrough 28-24 victory over the British & Irish Lions in Dublin and has since established himself as the team’s starting first five.
Jordan concluded with an acknowledgment of the Pumas’ strength, stating, “They’re certainly a powerhouse of world rugby at the moment. So coming over here, we know it’s going to be a huge challenge.” As both teams prepare for this pivotal match, the atmosphere in Córdoba is set to be electric, with fans eager to see if the Pumas can achieve a historic home victory against one of rugby’s most formidable opponents.
