Amelia Kerr Shines with Century in Wellington Blaze Victory
A remarkable performance by Amelia Kerr led the Wellington Blaze to a convincing 49-run victory over the Auckland Hearts in the women’s Super Smash tournament on March 15, 2024. Kerr achieved her first century in top-level T20 cricket, finishing the match unbeaten on 106 runs as the Blaze set a target of 184 runs for the opposition at the Basin Reserve.
Kerr’s innings was nothing short of spectacular, taking just 59 deliveries to reach her century, which included an impressive 17 fours and one six. She formed a formidable opening partnership with fellow White Fern Georgia Plimmer, contributing to a record-setting stand of 155 runs. Plimmer herself played a significant role, scoring 62 runs off 53 balls, showcasing the Blaze’s strong batting lineup.
In response, the Hearts struggled to maintain momentum during their chase. Despite a promising start, they faced regular dismissals, ultimately being bowled out for 135 runs in the final over. Captain Maddy Green led the scoring for Auckland with a top score of 39 runs. The Wellington bowlers were effective, with Xara Jetly claiming three wickets, while Jess Kerr and Nicole Baird each took two wickets to aid their team’s success.
This victory marks the second win for the defending champions in the Super Smash, placing them at the top of the tournament standings. The Auckland Hearts now hold a record of one loss and one no-result, putting them in a challenging position early in the competition.
