Apii Nicholls Navigates Leadership Challenges as Warriors Captain

The captain of the NZ Warriors, Apii Nicholls, faces significant challenges in her inaugural season as leader of the team in the National Rugby League Women’s competition (NRLW). Following a 20-10 defeat against the Gold Coast Titans on March 10, 2024, Nicholls expressed her struggles in motivating her teammates during crucial moments of the match. “I think a few people talk about how I lead with my actions, but I felt in that game, I needed to lead with my voice,” she reflected on the team’s performance.
As the Warriors return to the NRLW after a five-year hiatus, they are grappling with a steep learning curve. With only one win out of their first four matches, the team is still adjusting to the competitive environment. Many players are transitioning from rugby union or sevens, leaving the squad with limited experience at this level. In contrast, Nicholls, at 32 years old, stands as the most experienced player, having participated in 23 NRLW games and representing the Kiwi Ferns in 11 tests.
Leadership Transition and Personal Growth
Despite her extensive experience, Nicholls was initially hesitant to accept the captaincy. New coach Ron Griffiths recognized her leadership potential immediately but needed to convince her to embrace the role. “I thought she could lead the team. She’s the sort of player, the way she speaks, her humility,” Griffiths recalled. After some initial reservations, Nicholls accepted the captaincy but acknowledged that stepping into this role has pushed her beyond her comfort zone.
Reflecting on her leadership journey, Nicholls admitted, “That’s something I’ve been able to accept over these past few days and that’s helped me move on from that last game.” This self-awareness is a crucial aspect of her development as a captain. While some may find leadership roles come naturally, Nicholls is learning that it requires continuous effort and adaptation.
Nicholls’ commitment to her team is evident. She emphasized the importance of staying connected as a unit, stating, “We reflect, we learn, we take ownership of our roles and keep building.” Her determination to foster a positive environment is crucial for the Warriors as they work to improve their performance.
Impact on Teammates and Future Aspirations
Although she grapples with her own uncertainties, Nicholls has already made an impact on her teammates. Her leadership style, which combines humility with action, has instilled a sense of resilience within the squad. Griffiths noted that Nicholls has already inspired emotional responses from other senior players, indicating her influence in a short time.
“Whatever Apii said on Sunday wouldn’t have won or lost us that game,” Griffiths pointed out. He acknowledged that Nicholls feels a responsibility to carry the team, a mindset that can sometimes lead to self-imposed pressure. “She’s always hard on herself and I get that,” he added, emphasizing the need for Nicholls to recognize that she does not need to shoulder the burden alone.
As the season progresses, Nicholls remains focused on ensuring her teammates have a successful experience. “I just want to make sure these girls have a good season, because it’s their first time,” she said, underscoring her commitment to the team’s growth.
In a sport where teamwork is paramount, Nicholls recognizes that progress is a collective effort. “We’ll continue to build, we’re always going to be learning and we can’t always get things right,” she remarked. Her belief that “everything happens for a reason” reflects a positive outlook as she navigates the challenges of her new role.
As the NRLW season unfolds, the NZ Warriors will rely on Nicholls’ leadership while continuing to adapt to the rigors of the competition. With her experience and dedication, she aims to guide her team toward success, both individually and collectively.
