Auckland City Triumphs in Tense Penalty Shootout for 11th Title
Auckland City secured their 11th national league title after a gripping penalty shootout against Wellington Olympic on March 16, 2024. The match, held at Newtown Park in Wellington, ended in a dramatic 2-2 draw after extra time, leading to a tense shootout that concluded with City winning 7-6.
The contest kicked off with both teams demonstrating strong defensive skills, leading to a scoreless first half. It was not until the 80th minute that Auckland City broke the deadlock. Substitute Matt Ellis scored with a powerful header from a cross by MVP Haris Zeb. However, Wellington Olympic responded quickly, with Luke Stoupe equalizing in stoppage time, forcing the match into extra time.
In the additional period, both teams continued to press for victory. Olympic took the lead in the 103rd minute through midfielder Isa Prins, leaving Auckland City with just minutes to respond. In a crucial moment, Christian Gray, known for his pivotal goals throughout the season, found the net to equalize and send the match to penalties.
The shootout unfolded with tension as both teams traded successful kicks. City captain Mario Ilich saw his initial attempt saved by Olympic goalkeeper Scott Basalaj. The pressure mounted when Wellington’s Alex Solomon missed a chance to clinch the title, shooting wide on their fifth attempt. Auckland City capitalized on this opportunity, successfully converting their next three penalties. The decisive moment came when Olympic’s Alex Davies struck the crossbar, sealing victory for City.
Reflecting on the season, Ilich expressed pride in the team’s accomplishments, highlighting their earlier victories in the Oceania Champions League and participation in the FIFA Club World Cup. “Honestly, I’m speechless after the journey we’ve been through, I’m so proud,” he said during a FIFA+ broadcast.
Coach Paul Ifill concluded his tenure on a high note, having led the team through a challenging season. He noted the significance of maintaining composure during the shootout, stating, “We needed to hold our nerve, and I’m glad we did.”
The match showcased the fierce rivalry and high skill level of New Zealand football, with both teams exhibiting top-tier play. Haris Zeb’s performance earned him the man of the match award, while Owen Smith of Miramar Rangers received the national league MVP accolade, and Martin Bueno secured the Golden Boot as the top scorer.
As Auckland City adds yet another trophy to their collection, their fans celebrate a remarkable season marked by resilience and triumph.
