Australia Dominates Silver Ferns in Constellation Cup Clash

The Australia Diamonds claimed a decisive victory over the Silver Ferns, winning 68-51 in the second Test of the Constellation Cup held in Sydney. This result gives Australia a commanding 2-0 lead in the series as it heads to New Zealand for the next matches. Despite a competitive first half, the Silver Ferns struggled to maintain their momentum, particularly in a challenging third quarter that mirrored their performance in the first Test, where they lost 69-52.
The Silver Ferns started the match strong, trailing by only two goals at halftime. However, they faced a significant setback in the third quarter, where they were outscored 21-9. This shift in momentum proved crucial, as the Diamonds capitalized on their opponents’ errors and defensive lapses.
In the opening quarter, the Diamonds established an early lead, closing the period at 19-13. The Silver Ferns, under the guidance of interim coach Yvette McCausland-Durie, made adjustments, bringing on Georgia Heffernan for Martina Salmon at goal attack. Heffernan’s presence provided more structure to the attacking end, allowing wing attack Mila Reuelu-Buchanan to launch long balls into goal shooter Grace Nweke.
The Silver Ferns employed a zone defense in the second quarter, which helped slow down the Diamonds’ scoring. Goalkeeper Kelly Jackson made a crucial intercept, contributing to a quarter that saw New Zealand finish strong, winning it 30-28. This score mirrored the first Test’s halftime tally, indicating a closely contested match.
As the game progressed, the Silver Ferns struggled to maintain their scoring efficiency. Nweke, who faced increased defensive pressure, found herself off-balance and unable to convert several attempts under the post. The third quarter proved disastrous for New Zealand, with the Diamonds extending their lead to 51-37.
In a last-ditch effort to turn the tide, McCausland-Durie introduced Parris Mason at goal defense and Peta Toeava at wing attack. Toeava’s entry allowed for more direct passes into Nweke, but the Diamonds quickly adjusted, successfully countering the Silver Ferns’ strategies.
The match concluded with the Diamonds showcasing their depth, having utilized all 12 players by the final whistle. The next two Tests will take place in New Zealand, with the third Test scheduled for October 15, 2023, in Hamilton.
With their current performance, the Silver Ferns will need to regroup and refine their strategies to challenge the Diamonds effectively in the upcoming matches. The series continues to highlight the competitive spirit of both teams, setting the stage for an exciting finish to the Constellation Cup.
