Ben Stokes Trains with Sydenham Cricket Club Before Departure
England cricket captain Ben Stokes recently participated in a series of training sessions with Sydenham Cricket Club in Christchurch. Stokes, who has a history with the club from previous visits in 2019 and 2020, engaged with players ahead of his departure, showcasing his commitment to the sport.
Training Sessions and Impact
During his time at Sydenham, Stokes trained over three sessions, held on Friday, Sunday, and Monday. His involvement was welcomed by club members, with president Graham Harris noting Stokes’ dedication and humility. “He’s a very dedicated cricketer and a very humble guy, and the guys love training with him,” Harris stated. He added that Stokes was “very helpful, very constructive both with batting and bowling,” enhancing the experience for younger players.
Stokes’ connection to Sydenham runs deep, with his brother James playing in one of the club’s social T20 teams and his mother Deborah being a former player. This familial bond adds significance to his training sessions, creating a sense of community and continuity.
On Sunday, Sydenham captain Mitchell Gardner, who faced Stokes during a season in the UK in 2016, described the challenge of competing against the renowned all-rounder. “On the Sunday he was cranking it up with his bowling full tilt,” Gardner said. He noted that while the pace was daunting, the players appreciated the opportunity to train alongside one of the best in the game.
Gardner recalled how the batters were excited initially but quickly realized the intensity of Stokes’ bowling. “I was lucky enough to catch an outside edge or two, but there would have been 100 runs in between those,” he said, emphasizing the skill Stokes brought to the nets, even after a night of limited sleep.
Looking Ahead to the Ashes
As the cricket world gears up for the upcoming Ashes series, Stokes’ contributions to the Sydenham players have been invaluable. Despite the English captain’s efforts, Gardner expressed confidence in Australia’s ability to dominate the series. “Aussies are always tough to beat at home; if I had to make a prediction, I’d say 3-1 to Australia,” he stated, highlighting the competitive spirit that characterizes this storied rivalry.
Stokes’ training sessions not only provided valuable experience for the players at Sydenham but also reinforced his reputation as a committed athlete willing to support the cricket community. As he prepares for the Ashes, his time in Christchurch will surely be remembered by those at the club.
