Black Ferns and All Blacks Sevens Secure Victories in Dubai Opener
The Black Ferns Sevens and All Blacks Sevens both launched their campaigns successfully at the World Rugby Sevens Series opener in Dubai, showcasing their prowess on the field. The Black Ferns triumphed over France with a score of 24-21 in a thrilling match that set the tone for their season.
In the absence of try-scoring sensation Michaela Brake, who is expecting her first child, the New Zealand women’s team quickly established dominance. They took an early lead through tries from Jorja Miller and Risi Pouri-Lane, both of whom had previously participated in the Rugby World Cup 15s tournament. Despite a strong response from the French team, which included a converted try just before half-time, the Black Ferns maintained their momentum.
After the break, Alena Saili extended New Zealand’s lead, but France’s Alycia Christiaens closed the gap once again. The game reached its climax when Miller scored her second try, which was converted by debutant Braxton Sorenson-McGee. Although teenage newcomer Mariama Tandiang added two tries after the final whistle, it was not enough to secure a win for France in the highly competitive tournament format, which features only eight teams. The top two from each pool will advance to the semi-finals.
Looking ahead, the Black Ferns are set to face the United States later on Saturday, followed by a match against Fiji early Sunday morning. Fiji began their campaign with a 19-7 victory over the USA, while Australia also recorded a convincing 31-7 win against Japan.
Meanwhile, the All Blacks Sevens also emerged victorious in their opening match, defeating Great Britain 21-14. The match was tightly contested, with both teams locked at seven points each at half-time. The All Blacks broke the deadlock with a crucial try scored in the 14th minute, sealing their win as they aim for success in the tournament.
As the competition progresses, both New Zealand teams will look to build on their strong starts, demonstrating their skills and determination on the world stage.
