Black Ferns Announce Squad for World Cup Quarterfinal Against South Africa

The Black Ferns have officially announced their team for the quarterfinal match against South Africa in the 2025 Rugby World Cup. The highly anticipated game is set to take place at Sandy Park in Exeter at 12:00 AM on September 14, 2025. This matchup promises to be a critical moment for both teams as they strive for a place in the semifinals.
Returning to the lineup are key players Kaipo Olsen-Baker and Amy du Plessis, both of whom are coming back from injuries sustained during the pool stage. Olsen-Baker will bolster the loose forward position, while du Plessis adds experience to the centre. Notably, Stacey Waaka will also start in her 30th test, further enhancing the team’s depth.
The Black Ferns’ starting XV showcases a strong front row with Veisinia Mahutariki-Fakalelu at tighthead prop, flanked by loosehead prop Chryss Viliko and hooker Georgia Ponsonby. The lock pairing includes Maiakawanakaulani Roos and Alana Bremner, while the loose forwards are comprised of Liana Mikaele-Tu’u, Jorja Miller, and Olsen-Baker.
In the backline, halfback Maia Joseph will partner with co-captain Ruahei Demant. The midfield features the veteran duo of Theresa Setefano and Waaka, while Portia Woodman-Wickliffe and Braxton Sorensen-McGee will take up the wing positions. Sorensen-McGee is currently the tournament’s top point scorer, having accumulated 38 points, including back-to-back hat-tricks against Ireland and Japan. Rounding out the starting lineup is Renee Holmes at fullback.
The bench includes players such as Atlanta Lolohea, Awhina Tangen-Wainohu, Kate Henwood, Laura Bayfield, co-captain Kennedy Tukuafu, Iritana Hohaia, du Plessis, and Ayesha Leti-I’iga.
Allan Bunting, the Black Ferns Director of Performance, expressed the significance of the upcoming match. “This match against South Africa means a lot to us; it’s a final,” he stated. “We are also aware of what this game means to South Africa. We have selected our strongest available 23.” He further acknowledged the dedicated fans who travel great distances to support the team, emphasizing the appreciation for their unwavering encouragement.
